223 Throat Erosion

8 twist bbl shooting 80g bullets. How much throat erosion can one expect per 1000rds?
I know it is dependent on powder charge, heat and all that goes along w/ that, but nominally
how much erosion?

I got 14 thousandths per 1000 rounds for what sounds similar to yours, 80 SMK with stiff load but not overloaded at all.

On a service rifle I typically see .010"/1000rds.
80/60 split between 77s and 80s. Stiff charge of Varget. 7 twist.

nobody has mentioned what type of rifling they are referring to, that is a factor. cut or button rifling?

I am thinking you just opened up a can of worms.

If rifling type is a factor, which erodes faster, then??

not my intention but my barrels have shown about .010 per 1k in the cut rifling type and about .020 per 1k in the button types. loads and bullets were the same between so I think it's fair to compare. both types I have are Stainless. I think it's a well established trend that cut rifling lasts longer than button, just a matter of how much.

I am gathering data (shooting) a cut rifle barrel in 260 Remington. I will report out on this later (in a couple of years).

If your running hot, expect .020-.035

last year on my .223 f-class barrel I started at 2.032 to lands and finished at 2.053 = .021 after maybe 750 rounds. That was shooting 90gr bergers at 3025fps to 3100 fps

At 3000 to 3100 fps your cases must last one shot primer pockets would be done?

About 90% of them made it to three firings, after that 50% were only good for blackout subs, the other 50% were trashed. I did convert 350 pieces into blackout brass, I would sort them while loading using my 650, as the finished round was dropped into the tray if the primer fell out I would toss it. no kidding
