223 sizing variance?

Because he said it is at the top of the stroke.

The single stage presses (at least the ones I've used) set the leverage up such that the max movement on the ram is slightly before the lever reaches the stop. Like top dead center on a crankshaft, or going over the node on a camshaft.
Maybe so but I can only feel it after the shell holder bottoms out on the die then the extra 1/8 of turn of the die down gives the tightness to feel the linkage slack come out.

I was seeing a couple thousandth variation, decided to clean my shellholders in the ultrasonic. It seemed to reduce the range. But I would have had to measure and record a hundred case run each way to really know. But I did feel better about sizing with clean SH. I often wonder if the flat that the casehead is pushed against is square.

Yep, you will only feel it if you are pushing against something. You can measure it and you can see it as the linkage moves.

That can be the case. There are folks who make 'benchrest' shell holders that might be a little more precise.

You could also have a ram that isn't square but I think that is less likely.
