.223 Reamer Question

Is there a reamer set up for 80 grain VLD's, and or 80.5 Full bores?

Altho I know it'd be a bit different for the two...specifically:

What would the correct freebore be for 80 grain VLD's?

I have a 223 with .169 freebore. I bought this reamer for shooting the 90's but, have found that it works great for the 80 vld's and am working on some 80 SMK's right now that show promise.

With the extra freebore I have been able to hit the next higher node with the 80smk's. Previous chamber was .077 freebore.

I checked to see were the 80.5's sit in the neck. It was a hasty measurement but, it seemed like there was a tad bit less bullet in the neck with the 80.5's.

Doing it again for the 80's specifically, I would pick .169 freebore, maybe .150 at the least. Also, If you're wondering or concerned there is about half the bullet in the neck and the base of both the 80 vld's and 80.5's are just above the case body/shoulder junction. The smk's sit even farther up the neck. All of this is referencing from just touching the lands.

Thanks boltman. I'm looking to get the bearing surface of the bullet above the shoulder neck junction. I just had a new one chambered, and the base is just below the body/shoulder. The bearing surface is below the neck/shoulder junction. This is with a .090" freebore. The dreaded doughnut could come into play... ;)

I'm shooting a rifle that was chambered by Benchmark using a 5.56 NATO Match reamer (I think it's a JGS #0518).

It's perfect for the 80.5 gr Fullbores.

I shoot 75gr A-Max, 77 gr SMK's the 80.5's and even 90 gr VLD's and don't loose any case capacity by having to stuff the bullet way into the case.

Do you happen to know the freebore?

Here's the drawing I believe to be the one used to create the reamer for my rifle. At least everything seems to match up with my chamber :)

Thanks Guys!!! Seems like I need .0120"-.0170" freebore.

Come to find out, the reamer used on my build has a .090" freebore. I could see that it wasn't right as soon as I loaded the first rounds. My 'smith is going to use his throater to gain me some length on this barrel's chamber, and another...for another build.

Right now, the base of the 80 gr VLD is in the body, and the bearing surface is touching the shoulder/neck junction.

WTF? At least it shoots...

I'm thinking the .150" should be about right.

I think you'll be happy with that. I have another barrel that i would like to set up just for 80's and contemplate getting another reamer with .150 freebore for just them but,
Seeing as .169 works its hard to spend the money on another one. Good luck, maybe I'll see you at elk river.

My reamer has 97" FB...When I talked with Dave at PT&G he suggested this free bore for the 80.5 gr FB Berger's. Loaded round has the boat tail just below the shoulder junction but not the pressure ring.
