223 pulled bullets and OAL

I bought 1K 223 pulled FMJ B/T bullets and although I have loaded and tested them I am having varying OAL's say from 2.240 to 2.265. Now I'm guessing that this is because that maybe when they pulled the bullets some of the tips were maybe flattened causing the different OAL readings but then when looking at the cannelure some will not be in as far as others but the OAL is shorter. The tip doesn't look to be flattened any but I'm just eyeballing them. I even went as far as testing about 50 of the bullets lengths and averaged about .004-.005 difference.

ANy input on this at all. I don't think I'll buy any more pulled .223 bullets anymore, just too much variance. Now handgun pulled bullets I have no problems with.

No I did not just because the oal was my main concern but I have about 200 left so I'll do that tomorrow. I don't expect much of a variance though but you never know.

Have you measured any of them with a bullet comparator to the ogives? A lot of bullets can and will vary, some significantly, when you measure to the tip of the bullet. Measuring the ogive is usually considered more accurate. Might be worth a shot to see how they stack up.

I have not measured the ogive but that is a good idea. My main concern especially for the oal is that they fit in the magazine. Anything over 2.260 is pushing it.

Does anyone know how the die that actually seats the bullet does so by the tip/length or the ogive?

I have bought pulled bullets years ago and found that were at least 3 manufacturers of the bullets and sorted them into piles by shape and length. Some were very obvious.

Cheap bullets = cheap results. There are many problems with pull bullets but one is the fact that are going to come out of upteen lots of bullets and so….

Don't get me wrong, I buy them too but I don't use them for precision, they are great bullets for plinking and fouling barrels and that is about it.

Very true. good for plinking, or if you like burning through mags. Not for precision work by any means.
