.223 load?

I have a Savage model 12 in 223 1-9 twist 26 in barrel, I am shooting 68 gr Hornady hpbt match bullets over 24.3 gr of H4895, lapua match brass with wsr primers. I do not have access to a chrony at the moment what would my mv be roughly? Any input would be appreciated. I am looking to shoot to 600 in local comp.

I am going to guess around 2900 to 3000 FPS based on the info you furnished. Maybe someone will chime in that has duplicated your load or has some software to get a closer guess. How do you like the H4895 powder? I am getting ready to try some in my .223 with 69 grain Sierra's

Benchmark gives better consistency from load to load and I have had outstanding accuracy with h335 and blc-2 as well.

The H4895 has been really good for me. I used it in my 22-250 and with 60 gr v-max in the 223. It was hell on the coyotes, I have only been reloading for a couple of years and haven't really used a wide variety of diffrent powders. I tried to keep things simple to start.

if you have a 100 yd zero and know your marks for 200 and 300 yds. you can use jbm caculator and play with the fps till the marks match. you'll get a ruff idea on fps.

H4895 works pretty good in my 1-12 with sierre 60 gn hp

thanks for the info and replies, I was hoping to be close to 2950 mark, my next investment will be a chrony. I am just getting into the longer range competition game and will be putting together my equipment as I go. I am looking forward to getting some results at the range when the weather gets better.

I am using slightly hotter load of H4895 with Rem 7 1/2 SRBR primmers in a Savage M12BVSS. Chrony at just oner 3000 FPS. At 500 yards I still get a large amount of drift. Have been working with Hornady 75 grain HPBT Match. They seem to group better at 500 yards than my 69 SMK's, with less drift. Again, H4895 with just under 3000 FPS. Amax's will not shoot from my rifle.

I full length resize with Redding Type S full length die and seat with a Forster(?) Match seater. All cases trimed to 1.750 length, primmer pockets uniformed and inside flash hole reamed when new. Primmer pockets are brush cleaned with each load. All powder charges are weighed and trickled to set charge.

My suggestions to you, shoot the longest distance you have to work up your loads. Buy the best dies now, not 4 different sets like I did, and purchase and read Glen Zediker's book "Handloading for Compotition, Making the Target Bigger". Glen's writting style does ramble, but I learned much from his book.

Dennis, I plan on trying the 75 Amax soon I did try a little more heavier load of the H4895 but was seeing some pressure signs on the primers, but I think that was due to touching the lands, still fine tuning the seating depth. I will work up again as I get that down.

Notice I didn't give you powder charge weights, as I am on the edge with my 75 grain Match bullets. I have thought about reducing my load to the high 2900's.

I seat both the 69 SMK's and Hornady 75 Match no more than .010 off the lands. If money holds up this year, I plan on purchasing a seating die for the Hornady 75 Match. I find it a pain, even with a seating dummy to change from one bullet to the other.

Good luck with the Amax's, I can shoot 2" groups at 100 yards, from there, they go someplace, but not on target.
I know a fellow who purchased his M12BVSS from the same dealer, and his 1:9 just loves Amax's.

I get to cheat some with this rifle, I knew the guy I bought it from and he shot the 75's some and they shot well so I have a starting point for them. I will be getting out some more here in the next few days now that the weather is improving. Thanks again for the help.

With your 75 grain bullets, you might want to try Varget. I like H4895 for my .223 because I can get very accurate loads from 55 grain to 75 grain bullets, although now I'm only shooting 52 grain Amax's & 69 SMK's at 100 to 300 yards and 75 grain bullets at 400 and 500 yards. I'm shooting Groundhog Matches. I'd love to try 600 and 1000 yard benchrest, but the two clubs close to my home only shoot 1000 yards, so the next range step will be 1000 yards.

Take your time working up your loads, little details sometimes mean alot to the .223. Learn to read the wind, at matches try and spend as much time watching others shooting and where they are hitting the target.

That is the plan for now, just really getting into the long range competition game. I have shot 300 and under from the bench in local varmint matches. I was told that this gun likes varget with the 75 Amax. I have 23 gr of varget with the 75 in the notes that he gave me. I did make it out this afternoon and shot the 68 gr. loads again and saw an improvement in regards to the pressure signs. I seated the bullets deeper and it appears to have worked. I will have to try again on a day with less wind for some hard group data.

With my .223 Rock Creek 7.2 twist, I am shooting 75gr AMaxes with Lapua brass and WSRM primers with 24.0 grs of H4895. V= 3100 fps in the warmer weather. This bbl is 30 inches long.

Well now have the 75 Amax over 23 gr of 4895 with the fgmm primers running 2835 over the chrony (CED M2) and nice ragged hole group at 100. I will be working up trying to get close to 3000 fps without pressure signs. So far have shot out to 500 yds in the wind with good results.

varget was very inconsistent for me. That is what I was using to begin with.The H4895 has been pretty good so far. I am going to work up slightly and see what I end up with. I would really like to get as close to 3000 fps as I can. Start F-class leagues Monday night. This is the first time I will have shot this type of competition. Looking forward to giving it a try and see how I fair. Thanks for all the input guys.
