bkluke, I'v passed on this topic, however with interest. I will jump in assuming a lot? You do not say what rifle,action type or twist rate? Assuming a lot bolt action, 1 in 12 inch twist.Top five powders I would give some serious research into Ramshot X-Terminator Hodgdon H-335 Vihtavuori VV-N130 Accurate Arms AAC-2460 RL-7 As mentioned I would do some research into the listed powders. I was doing some research on another topic that involved research in part with powders so I thought I would post! Lane

My Savage 12FV prefers the snappier powder with the lighter bullets...such as H4198.

Here's another vote for RamShot Exterminator with the 40 grainers. This combo moves @ 3725 MV and is very accurate in my rifle.

No, not really. Not even close, in fact. I'm shooting this load through a factory 700 VLS with a 26" barrel using 27.1 grains of Xterminator. According to QL, with the H2O capacity of my cases being part of the equation, I'm getting about 49,500 psi, or about 5500 less than SAAMI recommended max. If I cared to, which I don't, I could,with this particular lot of powder), get slightly in excess of 3825 fps. The problem with pushing to "top end", even assuming great accuracy, is that lot-to-lot variances in powder burn rates can push you to unsafe pressure levels.

RamShot's published reloading data calls 27.5 grains of Xterm and 40 grain VMaxes the "max load" in the .223 Rem chambering. From what I can tell using results from QL, in my rifle this would be right about 2500 psi under SAAMI's recommended max.
