.223 for .22 mag?

Hi,
Will a centerfire barrel blank work for a .22 magnum? I know the .22LR is smaller, but I believe the .22 mag is the same diameter as a centerfire. Are they the same or does the .22 mag use a different rifling depths or...?

Thanks,

Mitch

Depending on twist a .224 CF Barrel will work just fine for a 22 mag, you want to be in the 14 twist range though.

I was under the impression that all the rimfire cartridges used the smaller bores. If no one here can give a for sure answer I would call a barrel company like Krieger. Brian Brown.

I'm nearly certain that just the 22LR uses the smaller(.223) bore, while the magnum uses the .224 bore. If I could use a centerfire barrel for my mag it would open up a few more options.

All I know for sure is when you look at Krieger's website under the "calibers and prices" section they sell 22 rimfire barrel blanks and 22 centerfire barrel blanks. Brian Brown.

Many years ago I wanted my gunsmith to rechamber a 22 long rifle chamber to 22 Magnum, and he refused to do it saying that the 22LR bore dia. was .222" and the 22 Magnum is .224", the same as centerfire 22 cals. Revolvers that offer 2 interchangable cylinders, one for LR & one for 22 Magnum must have the .224" bore. Soft lead bullet of the 22LR will upset to fill the larger bore diameter, versus the jacketed Magnum bullet having pressure problems with the .222" dia.

Alright, so it seems to be that the mag has the same bore diameter as a centerfire, but are the lands and grooves the same depth?
