Anyone have any suggestions on a good factory .223 load for prairie dogs? I have a coworker who will be joining us on a PD trip next month, and we're probably not going to have time to work up an accurate reload for his rifle (late 90s Rem 700 police in .223). He's a decent shooter, but he's just now getting into bolt action rifles. I've purchased very little 223/5.56 factory ammo over the years, and don't have enough experience to make any recommendations to him. I was going to recommend some 55gr Vmax from Ammo Inc to him just because JAG brass has been producing consistent results in some of my reloads, but it looks like they have discontinued that offering. Ideally, this would also provide him with a supply of decent brass for reloading as well, but that's a secondary concern due to the timing and how busy both of us currently are.

I haven't personally shot them but i have a coworker who shoots in tactical games which requires anywhere from 100-600 yard ranges with an AR15. at some fellow shooters recommendation he has been using the black box AAC ammo with pretty good results based on his scoring.

Personally, I would try as many as brands as possible, but Fiochi 50 Gr Vmax should be in your list. It shoots sub moa in my AR and my CZ 527.

I did notice that AAC has a 55gr vmax load which might be a good option if we can find it in stock, and it proves to shoot okay. Problem is that most of the "budget" ammo that's also accurate is pushing 62-77gr projectiles which aren't a good option for this application. So far he's tried 4 or 5 different cheap loads in the 50-55gr range and they all shoot around MOA which is encouraging. The limiting factor might end up being what shoots good and is available in sufficient quantity.

Ammo seek GSA reman 55 gr sp varmint ammo, loaded with H335 219.00/500 rds. I'm playing with this combination and it has shot under 1" (my hand loads). So it could be a usable source, only one way to find out.
Any 223 ammo that is using a 50 or 55 grain JSP bullet or has a plastic ballistic tip would be where I'd start.

Winchester white box - 45 gr HP bullet, they are amazingly accurate in every rifle I have shot them in and give very good results on PD's. These can be found at most Walmarts at a fairly reasonable price
Fiocchi has a 40 and 50 gr ammo also and they also work quite well and are accurate but are not as easy to find.
The other option is to go to ammoseek and see what they may have - but be cautious of shipping costs, many of the places have good prices but high shipping fees.

If I were working up a load for him, I'd be encouraging him to use a bullet and powder that I already use so that I could just tweak the load for his rifle. I'll have to remember those spire points though. I have a reduced load that I use a lot to keep my barrel cool. Its cheap and very accurate, but even at the normal price those are about a nickel less than I give for a 50gr vmax. It might only save me $10 to $15 on the trip, but with the price of fuel, I'll take what ever I can get....They will definitely work. if you were working up a load, the 55 grain Hornady Spire Points would work well at a very good price.

I forwarded him a link to that last night with the plan of him getting a box to see if it shoots well in his rifle. Instead, he ordered 3 cases of it. Problem solved, I guess...
My Savage 12 LRPV .223 is at its best at 500 yards when its being fed ADI`s 69 grain SMK.
One very important detail has been omitted! A 90 era R700 could be a 14 twist which will not like being fed bullets over 55 grains or being long for weight, i.e. them 53 Vmax and other tipped 55 bullets.
