.223 crimped primer

So, being completely new to the .223 cartridge I have a question. What is a "crimped" primer"? I have been buying once fired .223 cases for my new .20 Practical. Must have had a "senior" moment for about 1 month! Yesterday I realized I have access too as many once fired .223 Winchester Ranger(law enforcement) cases that I could ever want. However, the boxes say they have crimped primers. Does that mean I would have to swage the primer pocket?upload_2017-1-31_9-20-52.pngs before I could reload them?

You could, but I have done thousands of military brass with this little tool. It cuts the swaged brass off in a few turns. Think it's called a primer pocket uniforming tool. Costs about $6-10 bucks.

I use a cutting tool like the Lyman one shown above. Only thing is it's a small item built so I can put it into a cordless drill. Makes short work of the job.

I can chuck a chamfering tool in my drill press, just a light touch takes the crimp out.
I use a chamfering tool as well, chucked in my wood (!) lathe..............it just takes a bit to remove the crimp.

Primer's are staked in military brass by crimping to prevent them being unseated by rough handling, such as in a machine gun. Unfortunately the crimp also prevents proper insertion of a new primer and sometimes removal of the old one. The crimp on .30 cal primers can be so strong that there are special punches and anvils for removing the spent primers. Otherwise, you'll probably break the decapping pin. The crimp on .223 is less obnoxious but still an issue. There are two types of tools that remove a primer pocket crimp: swagers and cutters. The cutter removes the excess brass while the swager pushes the crimp out of the way. Hand cutters are good for a small number, or if you have a lot of time. Swagers are good if you have a lot to do. I have an RCBS swager tool for my reloading press. It works OK but the metal cup that pops the case off the swager at the bottom of the stroke often gets turned cockeyed and has to be reset. I understand the Dillon tools are pretty good.

Or just buy a case prep station.. Iam not big on lyman stuff, but I love my lyman case prep station. The hand tools are fine but hurts my hands after awhile.. You can get the case prep at cabelas on sale a lot of the time as cheap as anywere..just keep an eye on their website...

I do mine in front of the tv, at night. My wifey would object to the sound of a drill, so I use the hand tool. Yeah, I cramp up after a few hundred so I stop for a bit then continue.;)

I find the Dillon Super Swage 600 to take care of this quickly and easily. I actually ended up buying two of them so that I could leave them set up for 308 and 223 rather than changing over.

If you do go this route, be advised that Inline Fabrication also has a nice caliber-specific delrin centering insert that replaces the stock one; the replacement centers the brass in two axes, rather than the single axis that the generic stock one does.

You send me as many of those free .223 cases that you want. I will size, de-prime, and remove the crimp. I will send half back to you and keep half. Will that work....?:eek:o_O.

Steve :) ;)

Well, let me see if I can work this out. Let me call my nephew back up and tell him to send me a medium Priority box full! Send me money for postage,(probably around $12 if rates haven't changed) and you can have the whole box!! Box should probably hold around 400 cases. PM a short message so I can have you in my Inbox and don't have to remember this exact post. Ahhh. Of course don't send any $ until it's set up. LOL.
