223 Barrel Lenght

Ref: 223 bolt gun. What would be the best lenght barrel with a 1-8 twist and shooting 80g bullets?
Would be shooting at 600 yd

28" max. anything over that and the increase in velocity is only about 10-15 fps per inch. unless you go with ackley or switch to a different, slower powder (n550, rel-17, h380, etc.) there are some shooters out there shooting upwards of 31" in a .223 ai with unimpressive velocity.

Barrel length of 30.5 inches produces the maximum velocity in a 223 with most powders shooting the 80 grain bullets.

I shoot a 30 inch 8 twist MacLennon barrel in .223. Very happy with it. Get the best accuracy in F Class competition with 80 gr MKings and AMax at 2900 fps, CCI450, H4895, Win brass.

Ditto for 80 grain data. I am in the process of building another 223, this one is 1/7 twist, 28" heavy barrel.

Just got my new 30" tru-flyte on a Barnard action 223rem
Waiting on a throat reamer as th PTD Match reamer gave me a shorter throat than My friends Wylde reamered guns. Harts & kriegers.
Did a little testing only loaded about 50 rounds so far some just kissing and some 10k jump using 80gr Berger VLDs H4895 5 shots at 100y mid .2s 2800fps ,Varget 25.1gr 2945fps,.450" Rl15 3006fps ES 9
.550" 25gr shot tighter .400"
Really not interested in the 80 I have a lot of 90gr Bergers VLD & 90gr Match but throat to short to load these yet.
Fellow on sunday shooting F class at 600M with a savage 1/7
twist shooting 90gr VLD with H 4350 2770fps shot the best score of 24 shooters, second place was shooting a 1/9 twist Rem xcr 26" with 75gr Bergers and Rl 15 at 3000fps. Some heads where down on guys with 260ai.6br,308win,few magnums as well
