223 ai

This has interested me for a while. What are the advantages of this compared to a 223. I just like to shoot. I’ve got a 6br that shoots small groups and have a 223 service rifle I shoot with good results. Just seems like this might streamline brass, bullets and primers some. Thanks in advance.

A search should gleen you information you seek.
Some pretty “interesting” claims with the 223 AI.

There is a lot of great info on this site. Just remember to use a little common sense when reading here about AI cartridges. Some here run them way over pressure and claim all is good. I just hope no one gets hurt when the day comes when all is not good.
On a good note I have a 223 ai and love it.

I'm on my 2nd barrel in 15 yrs or so...

I like cause people ask......what is it ?

Huh ??????

Then you have to explain what it is & where it came from

Here...........Salvage target action & 28" P-N 9T barrel.......

P/dog targets start at 480 yds

I can honestly say that 223a is one of the most successful calibers I make barrels for... This is from my customer Keith Olson (he just texted this to me). He is shooting Hornady REJECTS from my Remage 223a. He just bought his third one from this latest run. They are screamers.

Several .224 ackleys here. No complaints with any. I think you can maximize efficency on smaller cartridges and the 223 is a great exapmple. The entire set up kind of changes how I would look at the advantages but I would say minimum of 100 to a maximum of about 200fps would give a good representation of simple velocity gains.
Most all of my guns have had phenominal accuracy during forming and after but all of my stuff is custom that I have done myself.
Chambering of loaded rounds can be harder sometimes depending on how they are configured due to the shoulder angle.

My favorite is 221AI but I think 222 AI would be ideal.

Final thoughts. Don't try to turn your little gun into a magnum. If you need that much extra horsepower gun up to a truly bigger cartridge.

The 223AI caught my attention a while ago. I was shooting 80.5 Bergers with just a bit less than 2 grains more powder then in my straight 223. They were doing 3050 out of a 30” barrel and accuracy was better then 1/2 MOA. It just works.

Just be aware that the velocity gains that may be realized with a .223AI over a standard .223 Rem are largely limited to lighter weight bullets. It is not difficult to achieve pressure/velocity using a standard .223 Rem case with heavy bullets (i.e. 80-95 gr) that will kill the primer pockets of the brass in one or two firings. Thus, a .223AI is of marginal benefit with these heavy bullets as you can already easily surpass MAX pressure with the standard .223 Rem case when using heavy bullets. In other words, going "AI" doesn't improve the structural integrity of the case-head region of the cartridge. So you need to be aware of the context in which the extra case volume will actually be of noticeable benefit. If you're interested in shooting bullets in the 80-95 gr range, the .223 AI may buy very little in terms of increased performance because pressure is likely going to be the limiting factor rather than effective case volume. It all boils down to what you intend to do with it.

One of only a few cartridges that I’ve tried that I just say, “What’s not to like?”
The weld is the center of the plate, the wind was at 4 o’clock and gaining.
Two different bullets, same zero.
I’m sold!

I have a 223 AI with a 1:7" twist 25" barrel. I get around 3050 fps with the 80 ELD-M's and 2206H and 2870 with the 88's and RL15. Both loads are more accurate than I am. Both are using ADI brass. I use it for PRS type shooting, it's a great thing, good ballistics and no recoil.

Another thing to toss into the pile of yays and nays is that there are "Fast bbls, Average bblsand Slow bbls." There can be 150fps diff, TRUST ME. Just like car engines apples to apples.
All in all, more speed potential w/o being overbore, less OAL growth and it will usually be on the heels of a 22-250 w obviously less powder used. The dies are common, you will pay the same for the chamber job, what is not to like? If the increase is minimal, all you will be out is the die co$t. :)
