So l pick up this Rem 700 SA 26'' HV barreled action in 223Rem with NO BOLT.. Now l need a bolt!!
Looking around the net l find several.. None cheap either:-( My gunsmith tells me ''NOT'' just any old 223Rem bolt will fit... So l am thinking why not just re-chamber it to 223AI... Get barrel, bolt, and action fitted at once... ls my reasoning wrong?? I am NOT a gunsmith.. l learned long ago that only dumb question was one NOT asked...

thanks

I've screwed on several "take off" barrels and they headspaced fine. Buy a bolt and gauge it, you might be surprised. Nothing lost by doing this first. BTW, I am an Ackley fan...

I acquired a Remington 700 22-250 with no bolt. Purchased a bolt on eBay and had it checked. Headspaced just fine. Only .002 greater than minimum. Well within tolerance. You might get lucky and it works. Either way, it won’t be far off.

There is a bolt for sale in the classifieds (http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/rem-700-bolt-short-action-223.3984609/).

As MrMajestic said, you may get lucky. If not, and your gunsmith has to set the barrel back to get good headspace and you like the Ackley better, I see no reason why you couldn't go to it. A bit more velocity and no more trimming brass. Sounds like a win to me.

As HandgunHTR suggested l purchased the bolt from Larry also on the Forum. Barreled action has not yet reached my ffl (Jarrett Rifles in Jackson SC)...Kenny's son Jay said, ''We will have to wait and see''... The bolt from Larry looks almost new. Again my thanks to HandgunHTR and Larry...
Will keep y'all posted..

100-150 fps out of the same length barrel with like weight bullets... Longer brass life... What's not to like about that?? If you like your barrel you have now, you can have the chamber end set back a enough to re-chamber to 223 improved... This will give you a new throte area. The rifleing should be fine unless you have shot thousands of rounds through it. Fireforming is not hard at all. Just shoot your current loads through it, or factory ammo and you have your formed brass. I was thinking about doing that with my AR15, but I don't know if ill gain enough to make it worth my while. I already have the dies and a load that will shoot 1/4 MOA. Its always on the back of my mind though...
