.223 80grains

Hi there

I am thinking of changing my 12" twist rate to 8" twist on my Sako 75 .223 because I want to shoot with the heavy bullets, like 80 grainers.

But i am wondering if I can get in trouble with the inner lenght of the magasine. Will my magasine accept the longer bullets ?

Those of you who reload .223 with the heavy bullets, please post the total length of the rounds.

In MM please ;)

Regards Lasse Nielsen, Denmark.

The Sierra manual says the OAL of the 223 with their 80 gr. Match King bullet should be 2.550 inches. To convert inches to millimeters the Speer book says to multiply the inches by 25.40 to get your inch to millimeter conversion. It comes out that 2.550 inches converts to 64.77 millimeters. This length will not fit into the magazine of an AR-15. It must be loaded single shot in a AR-15. Hope this helps.

While the 80 grain bullets will be too long to fit in the magazine, a bullet like the 77 gr Sierra or the 75 gr Hornady, not the A-Max) can be seated to magazine length just fine, and will perform very well out of a 1:8 bbl.

Another bullet to consider is the Sierra 65 gr. Game King. It is a really short bullet and I have heard nothing but good things about it .

If Sako does this or not I'm not sure. I took the spacer out of my Savage .223 mag so I can load bullets long. A modified follower may also be necessary. I know Rem. also puts a spacer in the back for shorter cartridges.
I'm using 75 & 80gr Amax's.

Hi there.

Thanks for the replies, even if the answeres don't plese me. My mag has a inside lenght of 61 mm which is not enough for the 80 grainers....grrrr.
I wonder why Sako offer their .223 with a 1-8 twist when their magazine is not large enough.....
