.223 69gr SMK in 1-12tw

I tried them in my Rem 700 w/ 12 twist. My 5 shot group opened up from .4" using 52gr SMK to 1.2" at a 100 yards. I found that they worked great in my 222REM 9 twist AR.

12 twist is just too slow to stabilize these bullets.I would go with a 1 in 8 twist if you change barrels.

Yep +1 same in my mod 70 sporter varmint 55 gr is my top with 12 turn 69's keyhole

Sorry to add to the tale of woe from others - it simply won't work. I had one of the first 20 Cz527 varmint synthetic rifles into the UK many years back that were specified with a 1-in-9 twist and loaded up 50 initial rounds, 25 each of 68gn Hornady and 69gn SMK trying them at 200yd on a reasonably warm summer day.

The 68gn Hornady loads wouldn't reliably hit the target frame; the 69gn SMK loads would just about hold the UK NRA Target Rifle 'inner' ring (around 3-MOA dia.) but made elongated holes on a range and in conditions where every shot should easily have been within that target's 1-MOA 'V' (inner) Bull ring.

The answer of course was that the factory had made them with 1-12" twist barrels, later put right.

I know sierra recommends at least a 10tw, but anyone have any success in a 12tw?

Here's a good Caliber / Bullet Weight / Twist Chart you can refer to when needed, compliments of Shilen: http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html
