To all of you ho still shoot this grand ‘Ol cartridge, do you find better accuracy with light, medium, or heavy neck tension? Or does it have to do with powder selection? Thanks guys-

I have been load testing my .222REM that has a long throat, here is my best load so far: Brass: Neck Turned Remington (annealed) / Bullet: Speer 50grn TNT / Primer: FED GM205M / Powder 24.0grn BENCHMARK / Necked Sized With Lee Collet Die (I believe it is a .001" neck tension). Shooting very small groups with the light neck tension(do to the turned necks) with the standard Lee collet die pilot.

I use a 222 with a 253 neck. I use light neck tension. Unlike RussellJ, I do not get good accuracy from either the TNT or BM. I find that Vmax and IMR 4198 or 50 grain NBT and H322 do it for me. Ther is plenty of neck for holding the bullet on a Duece and the light charges seem to light just fine. It is a mild, pun cartridge and accuracy is a norm

Yeah, I don't think that the neck tension provided by -.001 is too light for any of the small cal. cartridges.

Matter of fact, it's my hope that in the big picture, involving a 50,000 psi explosion, that the difference of a few pounds of neck tension will be lost in the noise. :) I'm starting to think that lighter is better as long as the bullet stays put in the neck. jd

With the exception of AR's, I pretty much have everything setup to have 1-1.5 thou of neck tension.

I know Russel does, but do the rest of you turn your necks?
I don't want to neck turn however, the rifle came back from Pac-Nor with a tight neck and a long throat when I had it rebarreled eleven years ago. It was the 1st rifle that I had rebarreled. It was a learning experience as in, I learned how to neck turn brass. On a positive note, it does shoot very well.

I like my 222 Rem just about best of any rifle I have ever owned. PacNor 12 twist barrel, no turn neck (.254). (Rem 700 action) Collet neck sizing, Lapua brass, 52 SMK or Berger 52, 21 grains IMR 3031, CCI 400 or Fed 205M primers. That load will shoot 5 shot bug hole groups for me regularly. There are many other powders that will work, 23 gr Benchmark, 23 gr BLC2, 23.5 gr H4895, or 20.5 gr H322......and about one thousands neck tension will do.
