222 Rem coyote kill

NIce looking rig and a job well done.

I love the 222 Rem for coyote hunting. My goto is a Sako L-461 full stock and I've had it in a Stevens 840, Marrochi combo gun, Win Mod 70 and a custom Savage.

The 222 is almost always over looked due to flatter shooting cartridges or the lastest tread but in 95 % of all shooting inside of 300 yards for coyotes and Varmints the 222 Remington will get it done in the hands of someone who has done their homework on this fine cartridge! Its the first cartridge i ever reloaded back in 2004. I will always have a good 222 around for my kind of shooting. Thanks to all for the likes and replys

Back in the day, the 222 Rem was the premier varmint getter. It didn't have the long legs of the Swift but it would get the job done under 200 yards all the time. Not to mention taking home the bacon in the Benchrest arena.

I have all the parts for a fast twist heavy rifle chambered in 222. I really want to see the accuracy of the little round with 75 to 85s. I had a 788 in 222 that was super cool. If the case works well, I’ll build a LH sporter walking varmint rifle.

I've recently stated playing around with 52g FB Bergers in my deuce. It's a late 80's vintage Remington 700 and is already earmarked for my youngest grandson...it's a great caliber (what's not to like?), "fun for the whole family" as they used to say.

We killed hundreds of coyotes with Rem 788, 700, and Sako's during the 70's and 80's.

50g Sierra lead tip blitz, Rem 7 1/2, H322 our #1 bullet
55g Sierra lead tip blitz, Rem 71/2 with H335 is a hammer with massive holes

45g Sierra High velocity spt at 3600 is awesome, no floppers due to great penetration-H335!

40g may produce runners....will really pizzz you off in spades to chase them down!

52 and 53g Sierra MK also worked

Speer 52g flying trash cans work great but drop and blow more for 250 yard shots

All benchrest bullets made on a j4 jacket worked very well in the 52-53g weight

The most over looked powder for this case is the H335 with a 7 1/2. Velocity is about 200 fps faster than H322 with exceptional accuracy. Walt Berger did set a few records with H335 and his 52's.

The vast majority of coyote hunters will over look the Sierra 55g lead tip blitz and the Sierra 55g semi point, but they hammer coyotes hard and keep them on the ground.

For quartering shots on coyotes running in to you that will not stop and the quartering shots running away, the penetration of the 45g Sierra high velocity spt, 55g Sierra lead tip blitz, and 55g Sierra semi point just anchor coyotes real hard

The sako's had long throats, we went straight to the 55g Sierra semi point with H335 with 7 1/2 primer....amazing at the WHOP sound you hear when they connect...I love it!

I have had speer 52's fail on up the azz shots, and a couple blew up on shoulders, but I still love them. Speer makes a 52g bt match that is unbelievably accurate and a 55g tnt that also works well on coyotes. You rarely ever hear of anyone using them but they give greater penetration, and shoot bug holes...no second quality bullet at all, proved in many of my customs.

Hunting coyotes is weird, you shoot them at all angles and distances from 10 feet to 250 yards, with 85 yards being an average shot for me. Lions are always a target of opportunity in Az, use a bullet stout enough to kill them from any angle. Darn calf killers need dispatching, carry a lion tag at all times!

Right before I left AZ, I shot half a dozen coyotes with a Rem 788 in 222 using 50g Sierra high velocity spt with a hot load of H335, Rem 7 1/2, and Rem cases.@3400. I can remember shooting a few at 40-50 yards though both shoulders....no floppers, flippers, and walkers on their back two feet!

If I were picking a bullet and powder comb for a hunting gun, 222:

H335 would be my first pick with Rem 7 1/2 pirmer

Fed brass will loose the primer pockets on hot loads

50g sierra lead tip blitz
50g Sierra lead tip high velocity spt
55g Sierra semi point
55g Sierra lead tip blitz top end loads of H335 with real world results on coyotes you would just have to see to believe...no kidding....carry a camera!

You often loose the brass in the weeds, but lapua brass would allow you to shoot some top end speeds with accuracy, chambers on most factory rifles are loose where the Lapua would be right at home.

I had a couple of 222’s back in the late 60’s, one was a REM Mohawk 600 and then I added a REM 700. Still have the 700, but it’s been through a couple of barrels and calibers. First was a benchrest heavy 20 inch barrel. It was very accurate and HEAVY. Carried it to South Dakota on a prairie dog hunt with my son. He was shooting a REM 700 in 6mm REM shooting 55 grain Nosler BT, chron’d at 4012 FPS. He could reach out and touch them big time. I got the bug and when we got home I had my gunsmith rebarrel my heavy 222 with a Shilen 223AI. It made a big difference at those 250+ shots.

Well, I got old since then and got nostalgic for my old 222, so my gunsmith replaced the 223AI barrel with a #3 Douglas barrel in 222 . Now I’m happy and back in love with the triple deuce.
