I am looking for loads to try in a 221 Fireball. Which is the most popular powder, H4198 or H322?
Thanks,
Bob

in the lighter bullets 40grers- lilgun and 4227, in the 50s 4198,322, lilgun

1680 is good but temp sesnitive in my experience.

Thanks for the replies. I am looking to use 50gr blitzkings. 4198 isn't working, so i am going to try 322. Anyone have any ideas for loads?

I think that's the wrong direction for burn rate. My rifle had best 50 grain bullet results with either IMR or Hodgdon 4227. Weigh those charges carefully. A very small change makes a big difference.

I like Lil' Gun powder as well because it meters very well in a measure, burns very clean, and gives good velocities with less powder which saves money. I've used it in my 20 VarTarg and .204 Ruger with great results.

18.6 Gr Re7 powder in remington brass ,Fed 205M Primer, 40 Gr Hornady V-Max bullet COL 1.927 Inch is the best load for my 221 Fireball rifle. Its time for me to get out prairie dog shooting.

If you haven't looked at it yet, you may want to refer to Hodgdon's site.....covers the .221FB:

I wore out one barrel on prairie dogs using AA-1680 and 40 grain Ballistic Tips.

I too have had excellent luck with the AA-1680, only I am shooting 40gr. V-max's with a CCI BR-4 primer.

I was shooting Lil Gun, Remington BR Primers, and 50 grain V-Max Bullets.

Broke the 221 down a while back and rebarreled to a 223.
Still have lots of Brass and RCBS Dies if anyone is in need.
