.220 Swift twist Recommendation?

ISS

Gold $$ Contributor
I am gathering components for a 220 Swift build.

Stuck, I am, between eight and nine inch twist. I want to shoot the 80gr bullets.

thanks,

ISS

I would go with an 8 twist to give you insurance/ 9 is borderline
(Better to overtwist than undertwist)
I use the Berger 85.5's with excellent results FWIW in an 8 twist Swift AI
And have used JLK 80's in the same gun (it likes the JLK's a tiny bit better),
but that is Jimmy Lee Knox Made old stock I had 2 boxes left of)
I started my Load development with the JLK 80's and when I looked for a replacement...
... the Berger 85.5 fit the bill

I know you might throw rocks at me but if I don’t say it someone else will. I am a swift fan period, however my 700 never fed the round reliably. Next thing is the components. I assume you have a pile of 220 swift brass to use but if not it can be tricky to locate. Same with a 22/250 at the time I built my rifle it was hard to get also. I went with a 22 creedmoor just for the ease of components. Mine shoots great and I’m glad i built it

The build will be on a post-WWII Commercial Mauser '98. Feeding will not be an issue from the magazine or single loading. I would like to shoot some of the 90gr Bergers as well, but their manual says I need a 7" twist. I have a couple months leeway time, the '98 is off having DST's fitted and tuned.

thanks all,

ISS

I own 2 swift's.
One with a 12 twist that has 2,990 rounds through it
The other with a 10 twist. That has 1,850 rounds through it.

Almost time to re-barrel the 12 twist...

So, with that said"..
10 twist all the way. All from 40gr to 77grn will be fully stable with it.

And very usable speeds.

There is always someone that has to go off on a tangent about some other caliber. I love the 220 Swift and I have everything for the build. I'm going with AI version. I have the regular 220 Swift and I wish I knew how many animals it has killed. Let's just say a bunch. You will love the Swift. And how it comes up in a conversation. Kind of like, you shoot a 22 Creedmoor, good caliber, me myself I shoot a Swift, 220 Swift. There is no mistake when other shooters hear the word Swift.
