220 swift go to loads.

What are the common go to powders and loads for a 14 twist 220 swift? Hornady makes a 60 grain bullet that is said to be compatible with 14 twist barrels, i have a box of those coming and a few powders to try. How about something with 50 or 55 grain bullets. I have quite a few powders in the range that seems to be appropriate, but If there is some old standby combo that seems to work I would probably just go with it and burn up as few components as possible experimenting. It will be used for coyotes and exploding a few water jugs

4064 is the classic powder for a swift
I am picking up a swift barrel on Sunday that I had the chamber cleaned up that originally came from the Remington custom shop

Howdy !

WW760 ( H414 same stuff ) and FED Large Magnum Rifle Match under a ( example )
Hornady 55 SX worked extremely well in my buddies' Savage M-112V .220 Swift.
The combo was deadly on " Soybeanus Digestus ". Please note: Hornady designed and manufactured these bullets to be " explosive " in their terminal performance..... hence the name " SX " ( " super explosive ).

These days, it appears WW760 is being supplanted by " 6.5 StaBal ". This is a more recent ball powder, that happens to be temperature stable; and has a " burn rate'"
ranking just 2 positions " slower " than WW760.

The .220 Swift along w/ the 1-14 twist should be able to stabilize .224" cal 60gr bullets, as-long-as bullet lg does nothing exceed .750". At the upper end of shootable bullets weights in this cartridge/twist combo is the Sierrra 63 Semi-Pointed.

Winchester 760 has worked very well for the 14tw Swift that I have now. I shoot 50gr NBT, 53gr Vmax through it. WD

The classic standby powder for the Swift? IMR 4064, it always works. It will take a 55 grain bullet between 3800 - 3900 fps and smokes whatever it hits.
I've used H414/760 a lot also and one of my Swifts is loaded with 2700 now.
I have a good load using VV160 and the 64 grain Berger in a 12 twist.
My 14 twist Swifts all shot the 55 grain plastic tipped bullets great and they hit hard. I've found that the standard Sierra soft points shoot just as well and make a mess of varmints from ground hogs to coyotes.

My favorite is H4895 and 50 grain Nosler BT. I think that I am only pushing 3700-3800fps. Really does wonders on pdogs. I usually run a pair to keep from getting too hot if action is good.

Good to know that 14-twist barrel stabilizes the 53 V-max. Will have to try them out of my Ruger; will measure the actual twist, too; I suspect it might be a little faster than specs claim.

Had a Hb Ruger, my issue was with a full case of 4064/ 52 gr. All I could get was about 3700, basically a louder 22-250 . Ruger bbls tended to be a bit big in bore.
At that time my 40X, 22-250 with the H2 bbl would push 55 Sierra spbt at 3815 fps……no more Swift.
These days, most chuck shooting, 20 TAC, never looked back, though still mess with R2, Zipper, & 225 in highwalls.
Sorry for the thread drift.

In a couple of Ruger 77Vs, H4895 or preferably RL15 were my top choices with 50-53gr pointy bullets. Not quite full tilt, but in the upper regions of pressure/speed shot best. Good to 400+ yds IME.

Dont forget 3031. It was the original Swift powder. In a model 54 Winchester, it shot real well throttled back a bit with 50s.

None of these powders are easily found lately. Betting N140 or N150 would be an outstanding alternate.

I had a Ruger V/T heavy barrel Swift, 38.5 grains of 4064 barely hit 3800 with the 55 grain ballistic tip, my buddy had an identical rifle and his hit 3900 with the identical charge and bullet. So they do vary. But that 55 grain BT @ 3800 got me into the 500 yard club in the prairie dog towns.
