220 Swift brass??

Fortunately, this is for a future project so I can afford the time to search some up, just want to get the good stuff.

I was thinking Norma was probably the direction I was heading twords.

My own choice was Winchester for bagged brass. Based on an observation by Fred Sinclair that all brass is the same price after sorting and culling so buy what's on offer. My Swift is a tight necked Hart barrel on a trued Remington 700 with a good scope. Perhaps sadly with the traditional slow twist substituting high muzzle velocity for high ballistic coefficient. Mostly a snarky joy to quickly take a few mid-range (<500 yds) shots before a friend can laser range and dial. I've a fair amount of Hornady loaded ammunition and find the Hornady brass equally good perhaps fewer culls. I know Hornady makes much of their own brass these days but I wouldn't be shocked to find less common cartridges the brass is still outsourced but certainly well specified.

I’ve used Norma, Winchester, and Remington. They all shot decent groups for ground hogs and prairie dogs. It seemed like, at one time, the Winchester was a little stronger. The Norma primer pockets loosened a little faster with full power loads.
It’s a shame that Lapua hasn’t made brass for the mighty Swift.

Norma is my pick as the better brass, closely followed by Winchester, and everything else a distant third. When I coyote hunt with the Swift I use Winchester, chuck hunting I usually use Norma.

Good luck on your search for Swift brass. WD

I’ve had a Swift since about 1980. I bought Norma ammo for a while and reloaded the brass. Years later I switched to Winchester and spent a lot of time prepping the brass (flash holes, primer pockets, and turned necks) and accuracy was wonderful. I’m back on Norma now, which I don’t work hard to prep. It shoots great, but I think those carefully prepped Winchester cases were the best accuracy I’ve had. 55 gr Nosler’s and IMR4064.

Another vote for Norma. It's been a while since I had a Swift, but Norma always was superior to WW & miles ahead of Frontier... & that's all there was at the time. If your barrel will shoot them, mine absolutely loved the 50gr Hornady SX with enough H4895 or RL15 to see a little over 3900fps.

Norma for better brass in original form. Winchester for stronger brass. PV for a mix of the two. Not as good as Norma, but better than winchester in the dimensions. Strong as Winchester.

I anneal the PV and off to the races.

I run mine with 41 grains of H380 and a 55 Vmax

Just a story... Back in the 80's the NZ Police had Sako Vixen .222's. Nice ( and occasionally they do come up for sale). As they were running short of ammo, they put out a tender for supply, and cocked up the paperwork, putting .220 as the calibre. As there was only one supplier for the Norma .220 in NZ, he won the tender. Needless to say, there was egg on the cop's face and a glut of discounted .220 Swift ammo around for years.

Nosler makes good swift brass. At the moment the shooters pro shop has blem brass available for .70c per case. I recently purchased a few hundred pieces of those and have yet to find a “blem” in the lot.

They also have ammo for cheap, 220 Swift. I ordered 100 ammo and 50 brass just last week.

I’ve found that weight sorting my 220 Swift brass makes a difference and I just went through and annealed 200 that were once fired in a prairie dog town. These were the older WW Super cases that have been fairly good quality.
