.220 Swift AI

Tossing around the numbers with a 75gr A-max and it would seem it would be a really nice long range varmint round.

The little bit of info I can find the shooters seem happy reporting barrel life similar to any overbore hotrod. Aswell as great accuracy.

So does anybody have any expierience with it?

I would be very interested in the responses to this question from owners of a 220AI. I have a heavy barrel Ruger 77 in .220 Swift from the 1980s with which I made my longest hit on a chuck.

I had permission from the owner of a golf course way out in the boonies to clean out the chucks that were turning his fairways into obstacle courses. Would go in at sunrise before the members arrived. Made the shot from an elevated tee that measured 425 yards. Shot prone with a sling. Bullet was a 55 gr Sierra spbt using a surplus powder similar in burning rate to 4350. Chronod at 3930 fps. Chuck was sitting on top of a stone wall that jutted out into the fairway. Seemed to me the trigger pull and disappearance of the chuck happened at exactly the same time. Just shows the incredible performance of hyperspeed.

So my interest is in the velocity that would be gained with the AI version.

I also have 2 of them one is a ruger #1 rechambered and the other is a custom mauser, double set triggers, a strait 1.250 douglas barrel in a benchrest style stock it's the 1st gun that I shot in the .1's with. Both shoot 50gr. ballistic tips at 4150 also. The ruger I had them going at 4300 but once the weather hit 80 it was hard to open so I dropped it back. I have documented the number of rounds thru the ruger and I have over 2000 full power rnds and it still shoots .5" @100yds. Granted I have to set the bullets out pretty far and I soon will have to rebarrel or at least set it back. Both of these are 1/14 twist rifles so I have never tried heavy bullets, but the next barrel will be a fast twist.

It's going to take a 9 twist to make that excellent 75 grain A-Max do what you want done... It is a heck of a bullet in the correct twist, but will suffer in a slow one..

I have one on a Rem with a Kreiger barrel with a 9 twist. Shoot the 75g VLD Berger out of it. 200 yard groups are right at 1/2 to 3/4". I am getting 3440 fps as a max load. I got the dies, brass, and reamer for a good deal is why I built it. (thanks DBell) Tried a bunch of powders and settled on H4381sc.

this may be a little off topic if you are trying to improve a existing chamber but I shoot a 22/243 and love it. very simple to reload. no fire forming just run through a sizer die and go. I shoot 75 gr a-max and have killed white tail and yotes with no problem at 400 yards. I have loaded to a little under 3500fts with very good results. Just a thought.

I have a .220 AI also. A full blown custom rig with a 30" 10 twist barrel. My favorite load is the Sierra 65 gr. SBT in front of IMR 7828. Have killed prairie dogs out to about 630 yards. My regret is that I didn't go with a 8 twist barrel to take advantage of the really fine bullets in the 75-80 gr. range. FWIW, the barrel has just shy of 1400 rounds and will still group about 3/8" @ 100 and around 3/4" @ 300. Good luck, John.

A fried of mine has a 6mm cobra built by Mr Ackley. Its a 220 swift improved necked up to a 6mm. I think im right on all that. Have seen gun and have a piece of brass for my collection.
