220 russian

do many folks chamber barrels for the straight 220 russian? would this be an accurate cartridge? Would this be a bad idea? Just wondering? Lee

Gene Beggs developed one off of the 220 russian that is supposed to be minimal movement on fire forming. Hornady makes the dies for the 220 Beggs. There was a barrel for sale here a couple days ago.

Lou Murdica has built and shot a 220 Russian in benchrest matches. I know he's tested both turn and no-turn necks. At the match I covered at San Gabriel he won all the marbles with his 220 Russian, beating a slew of 6 PPCs.

Yes it can be a VERY accurate round. But Lou confirmed that the cases do stretch more than a 22 PPC or 6 PPC.

thats interesting to know. I am always thinking, I know, no big surprise there. Anyway i would like to eventually build a 22cal rifle for longer range shooting. Say out to 500-700 yards. I cant keep but wondering if the 220 russian with an 8 twist would work very well? Maybe its a bit to small for such a feet? I am also thinking the 22-250Ai is possibly the better choice.
What kind of speed do you think you would get with a 220 russian shooting an 75 or 80 grain bullet? Basically just thinking out load again! Thanks fellas. Lee

Howdy !

With apologies, I am, again ) suggesting you consider the wildcat 22-35, .35 Rem necked down to .224' calibre ).

For out to 1,000yd, paper, groundhog, prairee dog )
a charge of 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Magnum Match put 3,500 honest Mv on a 75 'A'-Max shot from a 28' 1-8 barrel.

22-35 Barrel life exceeded 3,400 rnds before heyholing, when shooting 55's from a 24' 1-14 barrel.

It's a shorter case than the Swift & doesn't have a goofy rim, works w/ a .308 bolt face; and has less case taper than a
22-250 ) based on the case specs I've read ).

One gets hyper velocity w/o having to go as-large-ss
a 22-250AI. And, no ' fire-forming ' is really necessary.
Case shoulders only receive better definition after being fired once.

Cases are easy to form, and brass is not hard to locate.

After shooting many .22-250s, including customs ), my buddies Swift, and other .224 CF's , .222, Deuc Mag, .223,
.225 Win .22BR et al ); the 22-35 was the ONLY .224 CF I was happy with, for both live-varmint and paper shooting.

Again, I apologize; but the .22-35 sure sounds like a 'fit' for your circumstance.

With regards,
357Mag
