220 beggs

Yup, I built one when Gene first came up with the dies etc. I had mixed success with it - it could be frustrating at times. When I went back to a 6PPC it just felt so 'solid'. Try it but don't throw away your 6PPC!

I've been getting one ready. I'm going to campaign it in UBR this next year.

There are some quirks. But it is easy to shoot. Mine likes Benchmark, N133 and LT-32.

I have shot the 52 grain Hillbilly FB with 25.0 to 26.5 grains of LT-32. I have an excel velocity map that I'd share. Those are not starting loads, so back off and work up. It does not seem to like neck tension, but it did shoot well with quite a bit of jam. YMMV.

Here it is.

Great looking rig.
I just got hold of a drop port Viper in a tracker stock. I really wanted to try a 22-.70 short ppc then I started reading about 220 beggs

The 220 Beggs has the case capacity of a 100 short. It is easy to deal with. Just make sure that your reamer is a newer version to avoid bolt click.

I've been competing with three rifles chambered in 220 Beggs in UBR matches this season. All shoot very well and are stupid simple to form, load and shoot. As Greg has related, Benchmark and LT 32 both shoot very well. If you have an older reamer, have the chamber polished to .005 larger at the base or just get Gene's current reamer.

I have not tried the 6 Beggs yet, but there is a good possibility that I will have one before next season. The 52gr .224 bullets shoot great in light to moderate wind conditions, but I have found that 68gr 6mm ( 6 Talldog and 6 PPC) bullets do much better in wind, particularly at 200 yards.

YMMV,
Rick

What type of tuner muzzle device are you using?
It's a Bukys tuner, Tim. I built that rifle for Greg and installed the tuner. It's still the only Bukys tuner that I've used and have virtually zero experience with it except this...The first groups out of the gun were on the big side, so I gave it about a 1/10th of a turn and the groups immediately sucked right in. It was just a stab in the dark that was based on my experience with some other tuners, but it worked. I'm sure Greg can give some more insight when he comes back on.--Mike E.

Tuners are tuners with only subtle differences in the way that they are used.

I have been using the Bukys tuner the way Gene recommends. It requires a little work, but I think that it's worth it.

Mike has my rifle for a bit of fine tuning before next year starts. I'm going to campaign it exclusively in all the UBR events saving my 30s for IBS/NBRSA VFS. We'll see how it turns out.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. I'm pretty busy with work and deer hunting and don't always notice posts to some threads.

Really excited
I got my 220 beggs reamer, select match 14 twist HV blank and my drop port Viper action with baby tracker stock shipped out yesterday to Blair at Clowdis Precision
I can't wait til it gets back. Plenty of 52 gr Bergers and LT32 and N133 on hand. A new box of Lapua brass.
I've built several savages with CBI barrels in BR stocks that are pretty good but they are what they are.
This is my first custom action build.
I'm pretty pumped

Congrats! You'll have fun.

Did you end up with the Bukys tuner?

Follow Gene's directions. You'll find a nice, wide node to play in.

I'll try to remember to send you my LT-32 load map data. If I forget, PM me a reminder.

Mine likes light neck tension, but quite a bit of jam. Seems odd to me coming from the 30 world. But, if it is crazy and it works, it ain't crazy.
