.22 Savage Chipmunk

Anyone owned or shot one. I am wondering about accuracy. Just to add. For the cost what do you think is the best .22 for a kids first rifle?

I am looking for a starter for my 11 year old grandson. He is kinda in the tweener stage of youth size and full size. He is 5' tall so I am leaning toward a full size 22 but want one that is accurate but not to pricey

Savage doesn't make a Chipmunk but the do make great single shot and repeating 22s. The Chipmunk has had several manufacturers since the 80s.
I think the Savage is a Rascal and it has a very good trigger.
Either way, at 11, I think he's a bit old for the smaller rifle. It really is a small rifle. The scope on this one is a 3/4" Redfield.

The length of pull is about 12 inches on the smaller versions. Measure him from the crook of the elbow to his bent trigger finger and it might give you a feel for what size he needs.
Even if a stock were trimmed back a bit, the cutoff could be added back restoring size as he grows.

Thanks everyone. That helps a lot. I am off the the Guns of the West show in Phoenix tomorrow and should be able to find something there. When I was a kid it was shoot dads or don't shoot.

At 11 and 5' tall I would get him a fullsize.

I agree. I'm thinking about a 1st 22 for my grandson. He's not that tall, but he's almost 11. A bolt action, in my opinion would be best for a first rifle. Not a semi-auto....even though many can be very cheap.

Don't know what your level of 'pricey' is, but here's two suggestions:

Savage Mark II...with accutrigger and wood stock. When you end up paying for the local FFL fee, the gun will run you a little over $200

Then there's the same gun, without the accutrigger and comes with plastic stock. After paying the local FFL fee, it will probably run about $25 less than above.

In my opinion, the extra $25 for wood stock and accutrigger is WELL worth it.

The Marlin xt youth is a better choice from my view, i purchased one for my grandchildren and it is a tack driver, safe, and the correct size for a young boy or girl to begin with.

The Chipmunk is a good rifle for a kid. My grandson also has a Rossi single shot convertable, made for kids, that also has a 410 shotgun bbl..

I agree with the others that the Chipmunk is probably too small for the youngster you describe.
Marlin XT is a good choice; I also like the new Rem 514 single shot in a synthetic stock; under $200. It would fit a little bigger kids. Only downside - it's not like the old Rem 514 of the '50's & '60's - my first rifle which really was a nice full-size single shot rifle which still shoots great! Don
