22 Nosler

7mmmag

I have a 20 inch Proof Carbon 8 twist blank I am wanting to build light weight rig . I havn't totally decied on that caliber but with short barrel length 22 Nosler is what i came up with any others ? I also want box mag for it .
I plan on shooting 60 gr Ballistic tip to start out with . This will be my coyote hunting rig .
Thanks Jason

The 22 Nosler uses a small bolt face so I'm assuming the action you'll be building on is a small bolt face as well, yes? With a small bolt face action you're obviously more limited on what you can do with it. With regard to velocity the 22 Nosler in theory should yield the highest speeds because it has the largest case capacity of any commercially available small bolt face cartridge, at least it's the largest of all of them that I can think of.

I don't have one nor have I ever worked with one but my concern would likely be with the quality of the brass as I've heard some say it's just kinda ehh at best but if it's decent stuff and a 22 Nosler is what you want, why not.

If you can change the bolt face or you have a different action to build off of it'll open up a much bigger world of possibilities. My "go to" coyote guns are a Kelbly 22-250 with an 18in barrel and a 6mm Creedmoor with 20in Proof Research built on a Rem 700 and I run just about everything suppressed.

A lot of people forget this till it's to late but keep in mind, shorter the barrel, the louder they are. Even suppressed, my shorter barreled guns are noticeably louder than their longer barreled counterpart.

I like the 6mmx45 caliber with 80gn bullets. No worries about lost brass in the tall grass with inexpensive .223REM brass.

How far do you intend to shoot coyotes?

Where I hunt them, eastern PA, shot opportunities are relatively short, in the 200 to 250 yard range but most of my shots have been well under that. My longest shot to date is 261 yards but most have been under 200 yards. It's more about the calling in my limited experience with this type of hunting - I'm still learning it. I mostly hunt varmints in the summer but I need something to do in the winter so I started hunting predators.

I use a 223 Rem, Rem Model 7 with a 20" Douglas Match barrel, No. 2 contour (one contour heavier than the old pencil thin factory barrel). I also junked the plastic stock and replaced it with a B&C Metalist's stock. It has a 12" twist. It's a 1/2 moa rifle now.

I use the 50 Nosler BT's and never found them lacking at the distances I shoot. The light weight Model 7 is a joy for moving from stand to stand.

If you need more distance I'd consider the 22 250 which is a well established cartridge with ample availability of components. I like to keep things simple and uncomplicated so I go for established cartridges which have wide availability of components although these days everything seems to be drying up due to panic buying but such is life in the 21st century.

Not sure what the 22 Nosler does that a 22 250 can't do.

I will plan on this being a 100 to 300 yd gun . I do have the 22 Nosler in a AR that I like very well , it has my thermal on it for night hunting . I wanted a really light gun to carry in . I almost pulled the 22 250 but with a 20 '' barrel I would think it would be quite loud and somewhat limited in performance given a short barrel .
I have a few that will make little longer shots but all of them are pretty heavy . My favorite is a 220 Swift then a 224 Clarke , 22-6mm Imp , 240 Weatherby , 6 mm Ackley , all the way to 6.5 -300 Weatherby . I am going back to day calling closer to the woods tighter cover so d
I wont be carring any of these .
What bottom metal should I try I have some H S Precision but didnt know oif there would be another one ?
Walt do you want to sell that reamer ? Thanks

I threw one together on a Howa Mini, used the Grendel mags and it feeds fine.

Everything I read on brass issues seemed to be on the AR platform. From the description of most, it looked to me like it was a gas issue.

26” barrel, book loads of CFE223 3600+fps with 55’s was no problem. The 1-8” twist I went with was a wrong choice, some bullets didn’t make it to 100 yard target.

I am going to switch up and go to some 60-62’s and see how they fly. FYI, I have stepped on this one fairly hard and seen zero brass issues.

I see a huge number of people pooh poohing the 22 and 6mm Nosler, yet a fair size number have never had or shot one.......... The rebated rim leaves a fair bit for discussion.
Yet the 284 came out and pretty much received about the same welcome, how long was the 6.5-284 around before folks took notice. And, I see several just going back to the 284.

Same with the 17 Remington, it got hammered right out of the gate by people that didn’t understand stand it. I drank the koolaide from the writers for years. A short few years ago I bought one. Made my own conclusions, proved a lot of things were a load of bull butter concerning the 17’s.

Most want to say the 22Nosler is trying to be a 22-250. I look at it more like a 222 mag+P. If I had not committed to a 6TCU rifle, I would have went with the 6mm Nosler.
