22 nosler

Got a ar stoner 18" barrel wanting to shoot around 70gr bullet but not getting much for speed. Just wondering if anyone has tried faster powder than varget with short barrel and had any luck.

That six inches of barrel length difference will knock some velocity from the barrel compared to a 24" barrel.

Nonetheless the shorter barrel is much nicer to walk around with.

my 24" Rem factory bbl achieved 3620fps with Rx-15 and 53 gr SMK,,,,subtract ~25 fps for each inch shorter and the load must be reduced in a "rattle gun",,,so you should be able to get ~3200fps with no truble,,,Roger

Hate to say it but the stoner barrels in 22 nosler dont have a very good reputation.
I had done a good bit of research on the 22N and was convinced I needed one for coyote hunting at night. I have recently recieved 2-22N barrels.

The first was a White oak arms, 1:12 twist 24" long with the NM length gas system. I quickly mounted it and shooting factory nosler 55gr ammo my 1st 2 shots out the barrel were 3695 and 3715fps on the chrony. Needless to say I am more than pleased with the speed and it easily shoots sub .75" at 100yds.

The second barrel is an X-caliber, 1:9 twist 24" long with the rifle length gas system, threaded 1/2x28 at the muzzle. It also shoots sub .75" groups at 100yds with factory 55gr ammo, but I have yet to chrony this barrel.

I will add that x-caliber used a smaller hole on their rifle length gas system than WOA used on the NM system and it really cycles smooth, with nearly no sign of excess pressure on the bolt. The WOA barrel needs the gas restricted a bit.
