22 mag versus 17 HMR for bobcat?

I’ve decided I need a rimfire with some power behind it. It’s intended purpose will be bobcat and fox hunting, with emphasis to the Bobcats. Maximum 100 yard shot distances. The ability to ethically kill a coyote if one shows up would be good as well.

My only experience with rimfires is a 22LR so input and experiences are appreciated

I’m looking at Ruger American rimfire rifles

EDIT : i’m not tied to a rimfire cartridge, but I definitely want a more fur friendly option than my 223 for Bobcats/fox. I would also consider a 22 hornet or 17 hornet.

I have killed a coyote with a 17mach2 at 80 yds. Heart/lung hit and she walked 20 yds and keeled over.

Don't recall if there was an exit wound, but doubt it. Expect those 17 gr pills explode in interior and would be fairly fur friendly.

Very accurate because of superior bullet design as well. My take would be the 17 HMR.

I know a lot of guys that hunt coyote with a 22-250.

I have a 22-250. I love to shoot it, but I'm not a hunter.
I also have a .17 HMR that I thoroughly enjoy shooting. But the 22-250 has more umph behind it.

If you are looking for a fur friendly round that still packs a punch and can reach out well beyond the 100-yard distance you mentioned, you couldn't go wrong with the 17 Hornet. I've taken all manner of critters from coyote, bobcat, badgers, prairie dogs and ground squirrels with it here in MT. Yes, on those windy days you need to be mindful of drift but by applying a little "Kentucky windage" it'll get the job done.

The OP stated he needs something for bobcats and foxes, ... at probable short range.

I merely stated, in my experience, that a rimfire .17 can indeed kill a coyote. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time and the location called for a stealthy execution. 'Nuff said.

I too hunt coyotes exclusively with a 22-250. Don't know about a bobcat, but on a fox, my experience is a whole lotta' sewing.

I have both .22 WMR and a .17 HMR. both are very effective out to 100 yards. I have taken many coyotes with the .22 WMR and many trash pandas, opossums, skunks with the .17 HMR.
if you want to reach out well past 200 - 300 or more look at the 204 Ruger.

good luck!

Either the .17 HMR or Hornet would do well. I'd opt for the Hornet on bobcats, especially when a bit more reach might be required. I think you would get more exit wounds with the .22 Mag.

Bobcat's and Coyote's can be tuff to put down. I would rather have a hole, than loss one. I use a 223 for myself. I would opt for the 17 Hornet. The 17 Rem Fireball a good one if they are still made. I'm not sure how the 20 cal's are on fur, but a 204, 20 tac, or 20VT are good rounds. but the last 2 would be custom barrels.
