22 Hornet

I am looking at developing loads in mt Ruger 77 22 Hornet using the Barnes 30 gr VG. I have starting loads using H-110, AA #9, Lil-Gun, 1680, 2400.
I'd also like to try N-110 and N-105. Has anyone used these powders in the Hornet? VV Shows 110 in their loading guide with 40 gr bullets but nothing with 30 gr. N-105 isn't mentioned but seems as though is would be a good powder based on burn rate. Just wondering if anyone has worked these powders in the Hornet. Thanks

Agree with Lil'Gun and try carefully working up your loads w/small pistol primers (that's not a mistake) as
they often work better than small rifle primers. I would then try small rifle primers to see which of the two gave better results and you may have to SLOWLY play with the powder charge .

I only hope your ruger barrel shoots better than mine did. It was horrible. I sold it and what I should have done is rebarrel it from the git go.

When they first cam out I had a Ruger #3 in hornet and found the bbl to be .223 not .224, it shot horrible, just as Jon experienced, I took a take off Hart BR bbl that had been 222 and chambered it to 221 on the Ruger --- yum yum yum

Lots of info about the hornet on here if a little search. Lil gun is your friend !! I tried pistol primers with no luck, Fed 205's did the trick for my 77/22 Hornet... and yes it does shoot very well !! I only use either35 or 40 grain v-max's. I'm almost maxed out at 13.2 grains of lil gun.
Good luck... it's a great little round !!

I have a Ruger 77 22 Hornet. Like jonbearman mine was a horrible shooter. Bein the ornery ol phart that I am I refused to say uncle. I sent mine to Randy at Connecticut whatever and had him do his magic. My Ruger now shoots like it shoulda from the factory..

My rifle likes 40 grain Vmax, Lil Gun and CCi small pistol primers. H110 and W296 work very well also.

Click on “Ruger 77/22” on left side. Beginning at the top of the next page is a description of the services offered with pricing on down nearer the bottom.

Randy will get the slop out the two piece bolt fit, setback the barrel to cut it a ‘real’ chamber, give it a proper crown, and fix much of what ails the OEM trigger.

I shoot 40 gr V-Max, 11.7 gr Lil’Gun with Federal Small Pistol primers in my 77/22. I enjoy shooting clay pigeon at the end of the range and PDs once in a while. Guess I’m lucky as this Ruger is fairly accurate.

I had a 77 hornet....worst shooting CF I ever owned...worse than my 1884 trapdoor. I now shoot a contender K hornet. Lil gun or 1680. I prefer 1680....fewer sudden peaks in pressure, easier on the primer pocket.
