22 Hornet prime recommendations wanted

Been checking load books and find several listed. I also have read some reloaders using other choices like pistol primers.

What are some of you 22 Hornet shooters using.

Load books show:
Winchester (SR) small rifle
CCI 400
Remington 6 1/2

I am shooting only shooting target loads, I am not hunting. I have a Ruger 77/22 22 Hornet.

I will be loading bullets on the heavy side. 35 to 45 grain max

I started with Rem 6 1/2 primers when I first started loading my 22 hornet and they work great. Plenty of others said you have to use small pistol primers in the hornet, but I haven't any problems getting loads that just drill. In my CZ 527, 13.2 of Lil'Gun with either the 35 V-MAX or 40 V-MAX, or even the 34 Midway dogtown hollow points, works great. I usually keep the 34/35 to 1.735" OAL, and the 40 V-MAX set at 1.765" to work comfortably in my magazine. I bought some winchester small pistol primers, and cci's as well (500's I believe they are), but haven't even broken them out yet. I'm on my second thousand of the Rem 6 1/2's now.

I have a Contender Carbine and Savage Model 40. I load mostly Winchester brass but i have some Remington. For many years i loaded 12.9 grains of Lil-Gun with 40 grain Nosler BT's and Remington 5 1/2 pistol primers .However, I found on the Contender I would get some occasional leaking out the side wall of the primer pocket. I did not have this problem with Savage 40 .Going to the Remington 6 1/2 primer resolved this problem with no change in accuracy.

Remington 6 1/2 primer, 12.8g LilGun, 40g Sierra SP, RWS brass. .223" for my Savage/Anschutz and .224" for my Exemplar!

In my Anschutz 1730 DHB I shoot 13.0 gr LilGun under 35 gr V-Max bullets ignited by 205m primers. This shoots under 1/2” 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I bought Remington 6 1/2 primers just for this load and never ended up loading them once I saw what the 205s were doing. I love the 22 Hornet and shoot it all the time. It’s my favorite 22.

Load up some with different primers and test for yourself. Primers will make a big difference in a Hornet. I usually start with 205m's but you will see groups change with just a primer change.

I bought a savage model 25 ...and ended up with rem small rifle primers and 13.5 grains of Lil gun with the 35gr. v-max. Seems this is the best combo for this rifle. Don't know what it is but I sometimes enjoy shootin this rifle more than all the others. ::) ;D

When using small pistol primers has anyone tried different brands or magnum small pistol?

72 days without even a thankyou or any other response and now you ask for more info? :( :(

Thank you all. (dedogs thanks for your pointing it out)

Sorry for the delayed response. I have a few too many rifle's in the fire. I have been wrapped up with learning how to reload in general, load testing and like I said way too many rifles. .223 the past weeks. Oh and I built a reloading bench also in the past few weeks.

I love my Hornet and should have waited until I had more time to devote to loads for it. Finding powder and primers alone is a full time job. Thought if I had a few recommendations for primers I could start finding some.

Tried CCI small rifle primers, then switched to CCI small pistol and groups got better. Winchester small pistol have also worked well for me. My Hornets are 77/22H and Browning Low Wall 1885m both shoot real well with Nosler 40gr BT and 13gr Lil-gun with CCI or Winchester small pistol primers.

I also use Winchester small pistol primers in the 25-20.

Never tried the Remington 6 1/2s but with thousands of the CCI and Winchester it will be a while before I buy any more of that size primers.

I have accumulated a fair amount of brass now and have some Lil Gun and 7 1/2's. I will start looking for some pistol primers to compare.

On another note. (I am having trouble decaping the factory brass) tough to get out. Like its crimped. Bent a few redding decaping stems in the process. (I have spares now.) Like working on a watch. Small and delicate brass. Havent gotten to triming and sizing.)
