22 dasher 100 Grain wildcats LOW FPS

I just chambered up my 28 inch 6.5 twist 3 grove pac-nor barrel. I throated it for the 100 grain wildcats. The problem is that I reached a maxium load with 39.5 ramshot magnum powder and remington primer showing only 2800 FPS. I don't lnow if I need a hotter primer, moly bullets and barrel, ect, ect. I am at 100 percent load density and I have pressure, primer pressure signs. This usually means the highest FPS that can be expected. I know that the 6 dasher shooter are getting 3000 FPS with the 105 and 107 grain bullets and I was hoping to get close to that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Reed

I shoot a 22 Dasher using the 80 grn bullets and would say your powder is too slow I'm at full case of 4350 using 36.5 grns you may like to try using H-4350 and or H4831 something along those powders or in between the burn rate should be about right.

James is right. Ramshot Magnum is a very slow powder suitable for cases with much more case capacity. I'm surprised able to even get 2800 fps. I don't know your seating depth and case capacity, but QuickLOAD predicts with a 100% fill and 41.0 grain case capacity, you can only reach 2650 or so with a 100gr Sierra SPBT.

Here are powders that should give max velocity with a up to 102% load density. Note, Ramshot Big Game is the same as SNPE Vectan SP11, and Reloader 15 is very similar to Norma 203B. QuickLOAD predictions.

Winchester 760--100.6%--38.4--3209 fps
Vihtavuori N550--100.5%--38.0--3201
Ramshot BigGame--101.2%--36.8--3180
SNPE Vectan SP 11--98.7%--36.9--3178
IMR 4895--96.0%--34.0--3160
Hodgdon H380--101.8%--38.0--3152
Reloader 15--95.8%--34.7--3151

I just got back from the range and finally found a load that I am happy with 40.5 ramshot magnum and changed the seating depth. I am getting 2900 FPS 5 feet from the muzzle. After I rembered how to shoot shot a 3 shot group in the mid .1s to low .2s. I know 3 shots but they were the last 3 I had loaded. I'm not going to shoot any faster powders, i shoot all of my guns hot and this load is no exception. I tried the slowest burning powder and figured I would go to a gaster burn rate if needed. I'm kind of fumbling through uncharted territory as far as 100 grain plus 22 cals go. i hope my dasher shoots have as good as yours james. Thanks for the help, believe me I need it.

I'm afraid what you will find that if you shoot longer distances that slow burning powder will not yield you groups like you see close up. I would really consider something along the lines of H4350 up to say VV 560 for the 100 grn pills.
I'm not sure of your intentions with this gun if it's for hunting you should be fine but if you plan on matches you will see that your powder will be too slow for the long range stuff.
Good luck either way.

I am going to use it at 500 yard ground hog matches to. I am going to do some testing at 500 yards to see how it holds up. I might try some 7828 ssc and see how that works. I think that these 100 grain bullets have so much more bearing surface then covential bullets that is is causing more pressure, this maybe why the slower powders are working. I am going to keep tinkering until I find all the in's and out's of this 6.5 twist dasher. Thanks

Physics is working against you.
- For an equal weight, the smaller diameter bullet has a longer bearing surface, and hence more friction;

- At the same maximum pressure,and assuming an identical pressure curve), the smaller diameter projectile has less force propelling it. If pressure = force/area, force = pressure x area
For cartridges developing 60,000 PSI pressure

Force = 60,000 x area

With a .224" diameter bullet:

area = pi x,,.224")^2)/4
= 0.0394 in^2

therefore force = 60,000 x 0.0394
= 2364 lbs.

With a .243" diameter bullet:

area = pi x,,.243")^2)/4
= 0.0463 in^2

therefore force = 60,000 x 0.0463
= 2778 lbs.

At 5 feet from the muzzle, your chronograph won't give you accurate results. The muzzle blast from firing the shot precedes the bullet, and can trigger the start screen early. The longer the time between triggering start and finish screens, the lower the velocity the instrument displays.

For best results, move your start screen to 15 feet or more ahead of the muzzle.

You could still do much better with a more conventional powder for the case, 3100fps hopefully, try 4350 and Varget.

Any idea what the BC of your 100gr pill is? Is this 100gr made by Richard Graves of Wildcat bullets, or are we talking about a different 'wildcat bullet'?
