22 BRA 300 yard testing

got my new 22 BRA out today after some 100 yard load development here at the house and stretched it to 300 yards this afternoon. At home 34.0 of H4350 and a 450m primer with a Sierra 80 grain moly bullet was shooting one small ragged hole. So I settled on that load and did a seating depth test at 300 yards. Not real happy with the results but it should come in. Based on today’s results I’m going to seat at .008 off the lands and then tweak the powder charges up and down .2 grains and also use the 450m 205m and probably the BR4 primers in the morning.
Seating depth started at +.015 and I stepped back in .005 increments until I went to .020 off the lands.
Here are today’s results

What were wind conditions? .22’s are sensitive. In my experience.
Looks like -.005 is where you need to be. To me.

Wind blew 3-5 mph not bad but I noticed it blew them around a bit. The range was crowded and I didn’t get the opportunity to set a flag so I just ran with itnthe best I could.
.005 looks good and I like the triangle group of .010 also that’s why I split it and will tune loads and primers.

One thing I have learned, be aware of what YOU are satisfied with and achieve that, OR you are continually testing and about the time you find something spectacular, if ever, the barrel is toast.

By no means am I saying it’s impossible, don’t take it that way. Easier, maybe with 6mm?? Just learn the wind. If these orange targets you posted are the .990” that I have, that’s pretty good for a .22 in MY opinion.
Not sure if you know this but James doesn’t need anymore input on improving his shooting abilities or suggestions on trying a 6mm... he’s got those things covered. He is merely trying to maximize his performance of the 22 BRA case. If anyone can do it, it will be James.... and I am betting he won’t stop until it is down in the 1/4” - 1/2”range at 300.

One thing the 6mm crowd has going is abundant custom bullets. I just got the ball rolling on a fast twist 22br, thanks for posting your progress.

Has anyone seen a drastic difference in primers in the 22 BR or variants? I would think a BR4 wouldn’t be the right choice or st least not worth the time to look at.

I’ve ran Rem 7 1/2s, CCI450s and CCI 41s and the only difference I came up with were the 41s had slightly higher velocity than the two others.

I’ve not tried a non magnum primer in it.

James,
Do you believe powder tuning .007 in would have any merit? Not seeing the conditions, or being there, I’m only making a wag but seating IN seems to have the least horizontal through a wide range of seating.
Thanks for posting your tuning process.
Looking forward to your primer and powder tweeking results.
