groundhog season in 4 months.
what are you favorate loads for this and how does it preform on the chucks?
what do you think is the max range that you can use it on hogs and get killing shots?

I plan on shooting either 50gr. or 55gr. Sierra Blitzkings with Benchmark powder. Is there any other powder that would work with the bullets mentioned?? Also mine is a 1-12 twist.

I shoot a 12 twist w/52gr bergers and Varget powder it works great in my 181/2'' 22br it will litterly shoot bug holes!

Howdy !

I have long used 450 ft lb of energy as a guide, for determining at what range a particular bullet might " run out of steam "...
when looking to make clean-kills on " soybeaus digestus " @ distance.

I once asked Steve Hornady about what .224" cal ( Hornady ) bullet I could use, because I wanted to make a clean 500yd groundhog kill.
The 55SX I normally used would have scrubbed-off a lot of vel/energy by then.
I told Steve I was shooting a large-capacity .224 wildcat ( .35 Rem necked-down to .224" cal ) in a 24" 1-14 SS Hart.

Steve informed me of a new 55gr varmint bullet they were developing.... to be called 55 "V"-Max ".
He sent me a handful of their prototypes, that had a longer BT than they finally adopted for production.
Steve also opined that I shouldn't " expect miracles " of a .224" cal 55gr anything @ 500yd.... when the intended target is groundhog.
The available energy they can provide @ that distance, is or has become marginal ( no excess of energy ); in most instances.

Looking @ Hornady's posted ballistics data for .22-250 & .220- Swift ammo loaded w/ their 55"V"-Max; we see the same 432 ft lb
figure quoted for both @ the 500yd distance. What Mr. Hornady said about the .224" cal 55's was consistent w/ the 450ft lb guideline
I suggest.

I made the shot @ 510yd, and must admit the slightly less than ideally-placed shot resulted in a less than optimal " kill "
( no excess energy to aid in terminal effects ). Dead yes, but not decisively.

My point:
I had a .22BR bench gun, and shared its use on groundhogs. The barrel got put onto a M-77, for a hyper-accurate dual role'
rifle. We tried the .22BR after already being exposed to use of my .22-35, several .22-250s; and a .250 Savage.
My friend moved on from the .22BR to use of: first a .220 Swift Savage 112, then a full-custom 6mm Rem on a tuned M-700.
All shooting was either groundhogs, or local paper shoots.

I didn't hold on to the .22BR barrel either, eventually re-barreling my Wichita WBR1375 .22-35 24" SS 1-14 Hart to....
.22-35 chambered in a K & P 28" SS 1-8. After that, a re-barrel chambered in a new 6mm wildcat of my own design
( case capacity in the 6XC - 6 Creedmoor class ).

These days, it's possible to make a whole bunch of various chamberings shoot w/ superb accuracy; rivaling even the .22BR.

I had 2 jugs of 748 and nothing to use it in. I looked through some loading manuals and found that the 22BR with 50-55 gr. bullets worked very efficiently with 748. I have shot 40 thru 55 gr various bullets and they all shoot 1/4 inch groups or less in a Shilen barrled,Savage action in a Baby Tracker. So....give 748 a try. Fill the case up, level it off....NO-NO-NO-but you get the idea.
