22 BR Question

I am putting parts together to build a 22BR. I am looking at shooting the 80 to 90 grain VLDs.

Any suggestions on barrel length and twist rates? I am leaning towards 8tw but a little iffy on the length and taper.

It will be a long range varmint gun. No weight restrictions, but I still gotta lug it around!

Thanks! Ben

I think the 8tw is the way to go, you wont have any trouble stabilizing any bullet you wont to shoot. I just ordered a 22BR straight taper Target weight barrel, its a bit lighter than a straight tube, and its a 26'. But you may want to go up to a 28' as you will be shooting at longer ranges that I will, and may need a little more speed. But I wouldn't go longer than 28', or get a straight tube. But that's JMO.
Good Luck.
Mike.

I think you may need a 1:7 twist to do the 90gr bergers. It definitely wouldnt matter too much if you allowed for extra twist but you dont want to have not enough to stabilise them.

As for length, I have a 27' on my 22BRX and its pretty good not a straight tube as that would be way too heavy for practicality. I would look around that mark.

Is there anyone who is running the 80-90 grain Bergers in the 22BR? Im wondering if I'm pushing the envelope with wanting to shoot the 80-90 grain bullets in the 22BR. I am currently shooting a 22-250 AI in a 28 inch 14tw barrel, and I love the performance but am looking to stretch the 224 caliber bullets past the 600yd mark and to do so I think I need no less than the 75 grain AMax. I'm willing to give up the speed if I can strech the range out and improve accuracy and barrel life. I'm on my second 22-250 AI barrel and they seem really shortlived compared to som guys getting 4000+ rounds down the tubes of their rifles.

Am I looking for too much out of the 22BR? Do I need to just bite the bullet and go to the 6mm? It just seems like such a logical compromise between the 6mm BR and the barrel-burning, hyper velocity 224 caliber rounds.

As far as barrels, I've seen them as low as a 6tw and I know I don't want anything slower than a 8tw. Hart, who has won me over with their barrels, is probably where I will get it from, unless there is a better suggestion.

Thanks for your help! Ben

If you want to push them harder and still have good barrel life, then go for a 22BR improved like a 22dasher or a 22BRX. My 22BRX shoots 69gr nosler CC's very well and 3364fps avg with 31.8gr of varget. I could probably push this a bit, but no point as its making jagged holes at 100m fairly easily.

My 22BR has 1-9' Krieger and it will shoot 80g bullets quite well. They show some out-of-round holes at 1000y but still groups well under 1 minute. This is in the thin air of Raton so your results may vary. I shoot a 223 target rifle with 8 and 7' twist 30' bbls and have best accuracy with the 80g bullets. The 90's just are not accurate by comparison but I can't get over 3000'/s with them out of the 223. The BR might give enough extra speed to take the vertical out of their performance.
cheers,

Thanks for the input guys. I thought I had read everything I could about the 22BR on the main page, but I'd never seen that article. Thanks for the link!

The more I read about the 22BR the more I seem to hear that the 80 grain VLD is the best, so that is my goal.

Sounds like either a 7 or 8 tw is my best bet. Just have to decide on length, which will probably be around the 28 inch mark.

Thanks for the input!

Ben

I have used 9,8 and 7' twist 22 BR barrels but am currently using a 9' twist, with 68gn flat base). The 7' will stabilize the 90gn bullets but the 8' never did in mine. Sometimes on a hot day, a few might group in 1' but not often. The 80gn bullets went well in the 8' but werent very consistant in the 9'. All of my shooting has been in F clas from 300-1200 yds.

After reading the artical that was linked above, the 22BR sounds like a little bit of a pain in the neck. LOL!!! I think i am going to stick with a 22-250AI. Lee
