.22 ammo

New to .22 shooting. Got a 40X and a bunch of different ammo. Eley 10x, Eley black box, Win target, Rem Target, Eley/Rem Target, Fiochii, Lupua Center x, Eley target (shame on them for calling it target). The 10X , Black box and Lupua Center X were the best, with the 10X performing the best. What else is there available? What am I missing? I've read about Wolf ME, but haven't been able to find any. Might be a reason for that. What should I be trying?

Thanks
Tom

I use Eley Black Box in my Kimber 82G. We shoot 100 yards and it is far more accurate than I am. My shooting buddy loves Midas+. I didn't see it in your list. Wolf ME did ok in my Kimber, but it would consistently have 1 or 2 fliers in 10 with no explanation. Black Box isn't appreciable worse than Tenex, if any, and for the lower price, that's what I use.

Mornin Tom,
Nice to hear from you again. I ran across something you might consider, expecially since you've now got that 40X setup. I'm envious to say the least. But recently, my brother got me a couple boxes of Lapua Midas + for my birthday. I went to the range with my Anschutz 64 mpr and put started shooting targets at 50 yds not knowing what to expect. I mean I hadn't even patched the barrel and OMG...couldn't believe the group sizes for five shots. You'd think I was an expert shot! Gotta try some in your new rigs. Good luck and have fun.

I shoot RWS R100 for 200 yd. mini-Palma matches. Search for the rimfire test on this web site - it was on last week I believe. Very comprehensive but bear in mind your rifle will have its own preferences. My Win. 52C loves better Eley and RWS. Does not shoot SK, Fiocci, Wolf, or Federal as well.

Thanks for the info. Will give them a try. At 50yrds the old 40X will put those 10X in a single ragged hole about twice the size of the bullet, But lots of the guys do that and complain about the size of the group. I saw some Midas at the local shop. Pretty sure it was $45 for a two pack. Might be worth a try, and if it works out better than 10X or the black box, I can use it for the matches and practice with the other. Thanks

Tom

If you're able, buy Midas+ by the case. I can't afford to, but my shooting buddy got his for cheaper than I am buying Black Box. This would apply to any ammo. The more you buy, the cheaper it is.

Tom,
Check out Bruno's or Championshooters for Midas+ @ $15.95 a box. $45 is a bit steep, but with mailing you are darn near there. Good Luck with that nice new puppy!

for a relatively new shooter, I would try the Wolf/SK offerings and if possible buy a case of it. Shoot until that is gone and you will know alot more about your rifle, equipment and what you want out of it. Spending big bucks for smallbore ammo should wait until you are really home on the range... hold center.

It really looks like you got the expensive stuff taken care of. Ever thought of buying some cheaper stuff just for fun. I use the American Eagle stuff for just fun shooting and save my expensive stuff for when I really need it. Slim

Thanks again for the info. I will look into those aspects. Slim, I am a hard learner. The only thing I have learned for sure, is at the bench when shooting against others, there is no substitute for quality. I do shoot the less expensive stuff all the time. Just looking to stay competitive and of course save save a buck during the monthly Sunday shoot . So far, I haven't saved a dime. The more I get into this target stuff, the poorer I get. First it was a 6BR, then a 30BR and now the .22 40X, but I do love the trigger time. I thank you all for the input.

Just got finished testing bunches of ammo. Different brands and labels within a brand.

My Anschutz had a distinct prefference for Midas + over Ely BB. Ely CLub shot well.

For less expensive ammo try:

SK Jag rifle - good stuff at both 50 and 100 yds.

Wolf Match Extra - Same as above

Fed Match 711B - an unsung hero with excellent groups.

For the important matches - Midas + is the ticket in my rifle. Shoots knot holes at 100 yds.

Federal has 2 match grades...Match at 8 or 9 abox...Super match at 16 or 18 a box...Super match is THEWAY
but only if you shoot for top prizes or money...

Thanks for the info. Have been looking at those. Still experimenting, but so far for the monthly shoot, it will be the Midas. We will see what the others you mention will do.

Tom

I bought two-box samples of many of those same ammos, but still have not gotten to shoot them, because the first one I tried (SK Standard + ) easily put ten rounds into a single, nickle-sized hole at 100 yards with my Kimber 82G. I then bought four bricks of that to shoot in mini-Palma and NRA smallbore prone, but will try to give the other brands a fair shake too. ...Soon. ...Sometime.
