22/47L vs. say 22/250/AI fast twist

apples and near apple

BR -
Howdy !

My wildcat .22-35 is .35 Rem necked down to .224" calibre.
This is in same case capacity class as notional .22-47L.

In a 24" Hart SS 5-groove .224 cal barrel, my load was 41.2gr WW760 or 41.6gr VV160 and Fed LR Magnum Match under Hornady 55SX.

In a 28" K & P SS 5-groove, my load was 40.5gr AA3100 and Fed LR
Match under Hornady 75gr "A"-Max. Max vel load used same as above, and FED LR Magnum match for 3,500fps honest. Switch to straight match primer shrank groups nicely, w/ vel redux to only 3,420fps.

My wildcat not based on 6 X 47L, but it's capacity and case dimensions should help give you some sense of what a .22-47 might runwith.

Re: 22/47L

65BR,
That's REALLY close to the 22-250. There might be something to be gained, but that's the closest place to start.
Hope this helps,
Mike

I have a 22X47 L Krieger 1:8 twist barrel and two .22/250 AI barrels, one 12 twist and one 14 twist. The 22X47 L has a bit more case capacity than a standard .22/250 and less than the .22/250 AI. All shoot very well. Velocity of the 22X47 L falls between the other two, as you might expect. I did the 22X47 L before Lapua .22/250 brass was available. I had a supply of 6.5X47 L brass and 6X47 L dies on hand, so that was not a problem. Dies for the 22X47 L are strictly a custom item as far as I was able to find. I was able to cobble up some loads using some other dies I had on hand. Now that 22/250 Lapua brass is available, I would go with the .22/250 AI and not look back. No necking down (just fireform) and dies are readily available. I doubt you would be able to find much performance difference, if any, between the two cartridges. Good shooting! Vic

Hi,

This is my first reply on 6mmbr. I re-barreled my Model 70 Winchester Stealth 22-250 to a 22-6XC. I used a Krieger 1:8 twist, my gunsmith used a tight neck reamer, finished the barrel length to 29.250", and heavy ~8 pounds. I been in the testing mode with 75 grain A-Max, Berger, plus using 80 grain A-Max, Berger and JLK's. The A-Max chronograph 3282fps with the best group with a mild load of Reloader 17. Once I have the seating depth under control, I'll be leaning on it. The overall outcome and performance is looking great for next year varmint matches.

Steve, welcome to the forum, ;) ... guys I can vouch for the effectiveness of Steves 22XC as I have seen it in action. It loves any and all 75 grain bullets, and its shooting bughole groups at 4 and 500 yards. He was going to build a 22-250AI, but our smith had the 22XC tight neck reamer (.254) in his shop. Simply neck down 6XC brass, neck turn and you are ready to go. I believe he got his brass direct from Tubbs.

A 22-250 AI with a fast a 8 twist will shred berger and cheek bullets at 3600 fps, but will shoot v-max and b-tips.

My 700 has a 28" #7 Pac-Nor 8 twist on it and it loves the 75 gr A-max along with H4350 @ a bit over 3500 FPS...
It will turn a crow at 300 yards into a puff of Black feathers..

22-47 lapua can be readily made with 6-47 hornady dies swap out seating stem for vld,and correct bushing and your off to the races.I've built several using various barrels velocity with jlk 80 gr vld's runs 3400fps+ from 25.5" barrel.Just finished 20"22-47 C.P.G. velocities ran about 3240fps avg.Accuracy has been great 1/2 moa through 700yds can see this rifle on cloud peak gunworks web site. The 22-250s run 80 gr bullets comfortably in the 3250 range with26" barrel, good accuracy also.
