.22-250 small base die?

I've got some .22-250 brass that's been loaded a lot & seems to be getting tight in the chamber even when f/l sized. I believe it's slightly swelled at the web area? What are my options? Would another caliber small base die work ? Nobody seems to make one in .22-250. I'd probably rather not excessively resize the rest of the case, maybe a ring die by this Pbike fellow advertised in our classifieds tools section? Or would a .30-06 small base die do it without over sizing the body & shoulder? Thanks ,

Some time back, a friend found a non-carbide .45ACP sizer, pulled the guts out of it, and lapped it out on his lathe for a home made ring die.

Hi Alton,hi Boyd

Sorry to sort of highjack, but what is a ring die,if I may ask, what's its use,and whom can we order them from if need be ??? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I never ran into that problem with a 22-250 but when I first started shooting 6BRX I used 6BR dies and .1" at the base was not sized and after about 3 fireings the cases were tight in the chamber I usad a 243 body die before sizeing and solved the problem just about any of the -06 and 308 dies have less body taper than the 22-250 and would probably work. if they don"t size enough grind a few thou. off the top of a shell holder to get a little more shouldn't take much

A ring die is a die that only works on the very back of a tapered case, and it does not have a shoulder, or significant body taper, it only touches the case with a narrow band of contact, just above the case's extractor groove. I am not sure who makes them. Mostly they have been done by individual smiths. or adapted from another intended use, as I suggested. If you know someone with a lathe who will assist you, you might want to take a look at some of the less expensive non-carbide pistol cartridge dies. If they are slightly smaller than what you need, they probably can be polished out a little at a time until they do what you want. You might want to do a little measuring and checking on case specifications.

Thanks Boyd, I did some measuring and answered some of my own questions. My fired brass mikes 0.466". New WW brass mikes 0.462. My .308 , .243 , .270 brass is all miking 0.469 - 0.470. So I don't think a different cal. small base die would help. The .44 mag. specs show a base dia. of 0.457 , so maybe that would be a good starting point to make one? Thanks to all for the replies, alton9

Quick update:
I pulled the guts out of a .44 mag. seater die & ran my .22-250 cases into it with just a little cam over at the top of the stroke. They come out with the web miking 0.464". This is 0.002" over an unfired case and 0.002" under my "too snug" cases. Just a sample of 2 but it seems to do the trick!! Thanks Boyd, your posts got me thinking this way!!!

They chamber just like they're supposed to. No more tight closing.... Haven't shot any of them yet ,but I expect I've cured my "click at the top" too.
Thanks
