.22-250 REM & XBR8208

I have a great load that works extremely well in the 22-250 REM but I want to try the XBR just to see how the accuracy is.

The particular 22-250 REM I want to try this powder out in is as follows:

Trued REM 700 SA bedded in an HS thumbhole varmint stock with 26" Schilen SM varmint taper, Jewell Trigger, PRI picatinny/rings, Leupold 8.5-25 VX3.

Extremely accurate & my designated coyote gun.

Anyone using the XBR please post up your thoughts, etc & as always your input is very appreciated.

Thanks,
LH

Howdy !

8208 " tehcnically " is too fast a powder, to constitute a best choice for .22-250, in a typical application; like a varmint rifle.

Of course, there's always room for exceptions

I've also read where is is fairly dirty, if such matters hold any interest to you.

Powder w/ burn rates in the I4064, WW760, I4007 range et al,
are the more common choice(s).

Best of luck in your endeavors !

I use IMR 8208 with a 55 grain vmax. It is the best load I have ever seen with this bullet! Vel. is 3725 and the accuracy is great.

This is a fast powder for the 250 as stated above. It does work great with lighter bullets though and pushes 40's in mine faster than anything I've tried. I'm using 38.5 gr under a 40 gr BT and it groups in the .4's on a regular basis. The splat factor is awesome at reasonable ranges as velocity is well over 4k. Great coyote killer inside of 300.

I've tried it with a 52gr matchking. 34gr seemed to be the sweet spot, 3 shots @ just under 100yds rested on a spare tire, shooting into the sun.

I agree Rusty,,,Iv shot a lot of test grups on the hood of the car .,,,hahah....I used N-133 a few yrs bak with good rusults ,,,so this 8208 is ~aprox. the same rate ...and shuld giv similar results.....I had some nay sayers too...at the Hickory Groundhog shoot a buddie was there with a 22-250 and having turbl....had to load at the range and no powder!! He asked me for some 4895 which he knew worked...but I had none with me....only thing close was N-133 which I was shooting in my 6mmBR,,,,I suggested ~34 gr with his 55 Berger FB's and was cajoled!!! He tried it anyway and at 300yds was shooting groups the size of a .25$ (quarter) over and over...he stuk with it and shot his way to top 10 or so.....good to see a new member ...keep shootin....Roger

I use ww748,h380 and the likes with real good results.I would go to the sierra site or if you have the book it will tell you what their accuracy load was.

Things are not always as we would expect them to be. That is why we test. Too often, I hear from friends that just take what the manual tells them as gospel. The best load that I have for one of my .222s is with a powder that should be too slow, and it chronographs faster than it should...by the book. A friend got lucky the first time trying a load of 2015 in a well built 22-250, with 52 grain bullets. It is hard to believe the accuracy that he gets.
Take your loading stuff, flags and chronograph to the range. Do some serious testing. Have some fun. BTW, don't the majority of coyote hunters camo up, and call them in close?

BoydAllen makes a good point. I've had some 8208 since about last July, finally got to test it in 6XC a few months later against four other propellants popular in this cartridge.

(I won't divulge my actual loads for liability reasons. Consider this stuff to be quite dense so load volumes will be reduced compared to other propellants.)

I was pleasantly surprised to find 8208 gave me the smallest groups of any powder tested that day & went on the following weekend to use the best (lowest load tested) load at 1,000 yards with good results against a well-shot 6.5x284.
