22-250 Powder with 40 grain bullets

I have a Remington 700 22-250 that I am not happy with groups with 50 grain and up bullets. Thought I would try some 40 grain Blitzkings. Anyone recommend a powder?

Geronimo Jim--I don't have a Remington 700, but I do have a Tikka Master Sporter in .22-250 and have shot a ton of 40 gr. Nosler BT bullets out of it. I have used 38.4 grains of Varget for that bullet since May of 2001 and it still shoots fairly small groups.

I have experimented with 50 gr. Sierra BlitzKings and 50 gr. Nosler BTs and get some nice small groups with 37.0 gr. of Varget and also with 37.5 gr. of Varget I am using Winchester Western brass and CCI 200 primers with all these loads.

I recently gravitated to the Ramshot line of powders, and have used Tac in my 22-250 Savage with both 36 grain Varmint Grenades and 40 grain Nosler BT's. It meters well and is working fine in my rifle.

I shoot 37 grains of H4895 out of mine with Nosler 40 grainers. I have shot it out of two remingtons and two tikkas, all with awesome groups. Out of my remingtons it is pushing them right at the 4200 mark and 3/8" groups. I would defintally try H4895

rem 700 sps varmint heavy 26'' barrel 1-14 twist,
40 gr V-max
37.1 gr IMR 4064
3908 fps
IMR 4064 is not an extreme powder, shot the load in the winter at 32F 90 deg celcious),,and shot extremely well

Geronimojim,
I have five 22-250s all but the factory ruger shoots 40-55 gr bullets very well,I have owned many other 22-250s over the years and unless somthing was wrong with them ie, barrel shot out-crown problem-ect.you can usually get one to shoot 50gr v-max w/imr or h4895,or h380. with many other powder and bullets acceptable.
If I were you I would check action screws-crown-copper and carbon fouled barrel-stock touching the trigger or bolt ect.

you could try some reloader 7 for the 40 grain bullets. i have some here i use for 222. never tryed it in the 22/250 but will do when i get 5 mins. blowing a gale and heavy rain at the moment so cant get out.

also look at imr 4007ssc powder im using that in 22/250 with 50 grain nostler bt bullets.

Just thinking a bit outside the square- maybe its not your loads. Is your rifle bedded properly, barrel floated, trigger job done? Then make sure your barrel is clean- like start from scratch clean. Failing all that, I would use a 52 or 53gr SMK or even a 52gr amax. Those weight bullets are just made for 14 twist barrels. Benchmark, H4895 and Varget are suitable.

May want to check the runout and OAL of your loaded rounds.

Might be time to get a borescope down the barrel. If its seen a few rounds your barrel might need setting back and rechambering or a new barrel to be fitted.

If those still arent helping then get your action checked. I have seen remingtons where the bolts are contacting the barrels and screwing up all the harmonics. Also remington barrels arent all that crash hot. Sometimes you get good ones, other times you get bad ones that just wont group. Get a good quality barrel fitted, get the action blueprinted and start again.

I'm surprised nobody has said anything about IMR 8208 XBR. It's a screaming velocity powder in the 250 with 40 grainers. Work up to 39.0 gr and you should see velocities well over 4200, possibly even 4300.

This thread has fired up my velocity bug again!! With 3 22-250's (one of them Ackleyized) I have never even tried loading anything lighter than 50grs. I'm going to pick up some 40's at lunch tomorrow & see if i can get some accuracy out of the deal.

I would have the barrel scoped and have the smith document the bore lokking for defects.A friend had a new stailess fluted varmint barrel that was new and didnt shoot for beans. He sent it back to remington and they changed the barrel and relapped the crown. It shoots really good.
