22-250 loads

I just loaded up a bunch of 22-250's with 30.5 grains of IMR 4895 and hornady 55 grain SP's, and I was wondering if any of you ever go this low with powder charge? My gun seems to shoot them well and the recoil is nill, and I would bet a barrel would last much longer at this level as well...? However, I dont have a chronograph and was wondering how slow these things are moving? Ever go this low???

You're not even getting .223 velocity from that load. Try some Reloder 15 or W760. And don't worry about barrel life. You got a 22-250 because of what it'll do so just shoot the gun to it's potential and enjoy it.

I agree, I made the load for recoil because I have been trying to get my old lady interested and she doesn't like the kick. But after we found how well it shot I loaded abunch of them with some old win. brass for fun. How much IMR 4895 are you guys using? This gun seems to shoot best with this powder, although I haven't done extensive load testing yet). So how many grains, guys???

blacknwhite,
I never used the 4895, but I've had good luck with imr 4064 & 34.5gr with Sierra match kings 52gr bullets. Velocity isn't terrific, 3538 fps with a bc of 0.254. Seated to just kissing the lands. Primer is a BR-2 cci. 1/14 twist.

blacknwhite sounds like you achieved exactly what you were trying to do. No recoil, less noise and good accuracy, besides the reduced velocity whats not to like.

I am currently playing with a load for one of my 22-250's. I am using a powder that is typically used for shotguns. Very economical but not a barn burner approx 3150fps the targets and the turtles can't tell though hahaha.

I was quite surprised to find the sweet spot with 55 gr Noslers and IMR4895 to be down around 34.5 grains. Wlent up to 36.5 but couldn't get groups.

Savage LRPV, 9 twist. The gun shoots this load in the 3's easily. It also likes weak loads of H414.

Now testing, Barnes Varmint Grenade 50 grain.

Blasphemy I say! Sure, you can download those 22-250s to sub 223 velocities but you are missing the bigger picture. This is the perfect opportunity to buy another gun.:D A 204 or a 17 HMR is probably just the ticket. Neither caliber kicks worth a darn and both are extremely accurate and fun to shoot. Put that economic stimulus check to good use and help bolster the economy.:)It is the patriotic thing to do darn it.
