22-250 loads for 100 and 200 yards

Looking for recommended loads for 22-250 for 100 and 200 yards. using a remingtron 700

Howdy !

If you can tolerate ball powder, might I suggest you try WW760 ( H-414 same stuff ).
This powder is superb in this case capacity range, under .224" cal 50s & 55s. I expect your rifle has a 1-14 barrel.

I am selling a Winchester 1885 chambered for the 22-250 on the sight (pictures posted). I burn 33.5gr. IMR4064 behind a 55VM w/ Rem.9 1/2. This load also worked extremely well in a Remington 788 that I own.

the 14 twist barrel will probably limit you to 50 grain bullets or lighter. I'd start out with 38 grains of H414 and work my way up to about 40 grains of powder with a Federal mag primer. 2460 ought to really shoot well too with a 50 grain bullet.

in my experience - about 6 700's in 22-250 with 14 twist the shoot just fine up to 55 gr pills. with one exception

The longer balistic tip blitzkings, hornady and nosler plastic tip bullets are marginal,

there are a lot of non plastic tip such as the Sierra blitz that shoot very very well, and with you talking 100-200 yds the bc of plastic tip longer bullets is a waste of time.

4064 and h414/760 are my favorites with 9 1/2 loaded just under max

38 grs of H380 with a 55gr bullet or 34 grs of H4895 with a 55 gr. Both are accurate in almost any rifle. IF you use H414 (really good powder) it is necessary to use a magnum primer to get good ignition. I also use a mag primer on H380 and all other ball powders.

I load for three .22-250s; 2 Rems and a McMillian. All have Kreiger BBLs twisted 1/14. My current load is 39.5gr IMR 4007 and a 50 gr Sierra 1330 seated 7 thou off the lands. Have tested Zombie and VMax 50s but they do not shoot as well as the Sierras. The difference is that the Sie's shoot between .4 and .7 for a 5 shot group at 200 and the others between .8 and .9 at 200. Have also tested 55gr bullets with that twist and they did not shoot as well as the 50s.

I have been shooting dogs in MT for over 30 years and one should keep in mind that with higher tempatures one may run into higher pressures. H414 and some of the other powders mentioned are tempature sensitive. I recall one year there were numerous occurances of hard bolt lift using H414 (Win 760).

In the past I have loaded 37 gr Varget and 36 gr IMR 4064 with SIE 1330s both shot between .6 and .8 at 200.

Never had a 14 twist 22-250, but have several .223's and .222's with a 14 twist. The .222 will shoot 55 grain Vmax bullets fairly good. The .223's will shoot that bullet very well. Yet I hear this guy and that guy say his 14 twist barrel won't shoot 55 grain bullets all the time. Did I happen on some flukes? I don't know, but if I owned a 14 twist 22-250, I'd at least try some 55 grain bullets out in it! Interestingly, none of my 14 twist barrels shoot the 52/53 grain match bullets all that well with the .222 being far better.

All my 22-250's are Savage rifles with a 12 twist. I shoot the Sierra #1365 bullet a lot cause it just plain shoots big bug holes in each gun. The 55 grain Vmax is still good for about .33" groups. I have two or three bags of bulk Remington match bullets (55 grain FBSP) that will shoot in the mid to high twos regularly. I wish I'd bought a half dozen of those bags of bullets (250 in each bag). These bullets seem to shoot very well in a 14 twist barrel I might add, but have not done any serious load work with them in a 14 twist barrel. I orginally bought them for fireforming cases.

My favorite powder for the 22-250 is IMR 3031 with a 55 grain bullet. Not the fastest, but groups extremely well.

I shoot a lot of H380 and H414 in bigger cases, and I also use a Federal mag primer in cold weather. In warm weather I use a standard primer without any serious issues. But I also use Federal primers 75% of the time,

Big fan of the 22-250's and AI versions. Factory loaded Hornady 50gn VMax (moly) flat hammered in my rifle, literally one hole @ 100 yrds in a Groundhog Match with excellent groups at 300 and 500.

My first call to Hornady to ask what powder they used resulted in....."it's a proprietary blend". I tried everything to replicate the factory load for 8 months and decided to call Hornady again.....getting a different Tech. He asked me if I had the lot number so I hauled butt to the garage, got the box and told him.

The "proprietary blend" was actually N133, still my favorite Winchester/VMax 50gn/CCI powder.
