22-250, 22-250AI, 22-243 Win, 22-47L?

I'm looking to build my first .223 cartridge for general shooting of steel targets and possible use in a 600 yard F-Class situation. I've been looking at the 22-250, 22-250AI, and recently a 22-47Lapua,6.5x47L necked down to .224).

I'm just thinking out loud, but given the quality of Lapua brass and the higher pressure and small primer used by the 6.5x47 case, is this a beter choice for running the 80 or 90 grain higher bc .223 bullets than the straight 22-250 or the 22-250AI.

I've chatted with someone about a 22-35Rem wildcat, and that makes sense in a lot of ways, but probably isn't going to get me to the 3,200+ fps velocity that I'm looking for with the heavier, higher BC bulllets.

I've also talked with someone else about a 22-243Win wildcat, which will very likely get me to 3,200+ fps, but the 22-47Lapua may be a more efficient way of getting to the same point.

Does anyone have any experience necking the 6.5x47Lapua to the .223?

JeffVN,

I have had a 22-250AI, shot great and was flat shooting, But the barrel life sucked. Friends have had 22- 6mmAI same thing.

I think a 6BR or 6BR IMP would be a better choice for what you are going to do, much better barrel life. I have been there and done that.

But if you are set on a fast 22 cal. I would pick the 22-243AI or the 22-47 Lapua, because of the better brass, Lapua ).

Jeff, all of those cases have the potential to give you all the velocity you need to blow up every bullet you fire. If you're really set on the .22 bore, the .22 PPC or .22 BR will do what you want, do it very effectively and give you less aggravation. I have a .22 PPC with 80 Bergers that will shoot very well at 600 yards, the .22 BR would put you in about the same place. Less is more sometimes.

A 22BR improved will do the same if not better velocities than a 22-250- more like a 22-250AI with less powder and less wear on your barrel. All the accuracy of the BR style case with the small rifle primers. I would suggest a 22BRX or 22 dasher with a 1:8 twist barrel to shoot 80gr SMK's. Look at a 1:7 for anything heavier.
