Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

j reed,

for what it is worth, the 218 bee was originally chambered by W. C. Slocum a machinist, gunsmith that worked at Ga Tech.

he knew the Winchester regional rep and when talk of the cartridge in the modified Win got around town,
Winchester reps came to Atlanta, took he and his wife to dinner and paid a sum to have the "rights" to the design.

I have seen and shot the original back in the 40s.

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

an article from a Ga Tech publication" - I believe the design of the 43 bolt

W. C. Slocum Obtains
Recognition From
Winchester Arms
Recently Tech was given a little indirect publicity in which the student body might be interested.

Mr. W. C. Slocum, the master craftsman in charge of the shop in the Aeronautical Department, is the man to whom we are indebted in no small way. Mr. Slocum has been spending most of his leisure time during the past six months in making by hand a .22 rifle of the Hornet type for his son. Winchester Arms Company of America heard about Mr. Slocum's work, and sent a special representative to Atlanta to look into the matter. The result was that Mr. Slocum was offered a position with the Winchester Company, which he declined to accept; a very fortunate thing for Tech.
In the construction of the bolt of this rifle Mr. Slocum incorporated his inventive ability to such an extent that it is like no other bolt made to fit the Hornet .22 rifle, a fact which may in time simplify the manufacture of rifles to a great extent. The bolt is much simpler and much more compact than any of the well known makes. The representative praised Mr. Slocum's work highly, and complimented Tech on having such a resourceful man in its employ. However, Mr. Slocum, a'modest man, stated that his sole purpose in making the rifle was to provide a little entertainment for his son. Anyway we appreciate the publicity. Many thanks, Mr. Slocum, and keep up the good work."

I believe this is the bolt of the 43 he designed.

Being that I love the .218 bee I would really love to see the pics.Maybe you can send some pics to someone on here and they can resize them for you and post them. I have a ruger#1 in bee and an 1894 classic marlin and I shoot the Remington 50 plhp's and 11.0 grains of 296 with similar results .

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

That would be great if someone chimes in. Even though i built it i must say im quite proud of how it turned out. The color case hardening turned out stunning! Pm me your address and i can send you some pics.

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

I cannot believe what Bee brass is fetching on GB. 200rds of new brought $315 a couple weeks ago and 100rds bags of new as much as $125. Seen 200rds of once fired on GB with over a $200 bid. Crazy Crazy. I don't shoot my Marlin much and have several hundred rds of used and 200+ rds of new. As much as I would like to sell it for some crazy price like a buck+ per round I know how lucky I am and will have to pay more than that.

Sold the Marlin to a cousin and a 1B and 1S on GB 11yrs ago to settle divorce. the 1S was near new and I had never shot it. Got IIRC $480 for it and $500 or a bit under for the 1B. Sure wished I could have avoided that deal with prices what they are now. Had 6 bags of new brass I pd $17.50 a bag for. In about 09 I never figured I would ever be able to afford another the way prices were climbing so listed the brass @ 3 bags for $90 starting bid or Buy Now for $105 as that was close to retail then, sold both lots. Rebarreled a 22/250 for cousin in 6XC so got the Marlin back. Don't think he shot it in the 11 years he had it. Last bag I bought I pd $42.50 @ Cabela's in Rapid City for. I am a great business man. LOL Now unbelievably bringing over a buck a piece for new or once fired and that is about retail price. So almost a 3 fold increase in 10yrs.

Oh, and yea, I would like to see pics also.

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

I had no idea brass for it was that high! I have a couple hundred pieces which will last me a looong time since the round is so easy on brass. I cant be happier with how the 218 performs with the 296 powder. I tried lil gun but it fouled the barrel really bad so i went with the 296. I cant wait to hunt with it this fall and winter. Im betting it will be poison on varmints!

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

Love to see pics also.I wish Starline would make 25-20 brass again,it would'nt be too hard to form to
.218Bee brass then.Brass sure is expensive is'nt it.Love my 1b in 218 Bee I think a Contender barrel
would be fun also.

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

you guys are missing the brass, Starline makes and midway sells 32-20 which is the same case, --neck down and turn necks.

500 for $110.00

Re: 218 bee single shot finally finished

Man i wish i could post some pics of it. Ive tried and tried to get the file size down but it just wont let me post them. Im trying to do it on my not- so- smart phone. That may be the problem. Maybe someone will help me out and post some for me if i can email the pics to them... for those who have a sweet spot for little falling blocks, i think you will like it! ;)

Has anyone had trouble with lil gun fouling bad after 10 or 15 shots in the bee? Ive read its "the" powder for the bee but it fouls so bad i have to clean after every 10 shots or so. Didnt know if i just had a bad batch or what.

Yeah i use 7-1/2 primers. Just thought it to be strange about the fouling especially with everyone elses luck with it.
