20w50 oil/STP for neck turning

I read that Mobil 1 20w50 and stp oil treatment mixed 50/50 was an excellent neck turning lube. Will any 20w50 oil do? I bought a quart of castrol 20w50 but can not find Mobil 1 in that weight here. will that be ok? was not sure if Mobil 1 had a specific blend in it.... thanks chris

I turned 100 cases with Mobil 1 and STP in a 50/50 mixture, it was too messy and too hard to remove from the cases. It did do a good job...

Went back to Imperial wax.

Don't use 20/50, because at room temperature, it is a 20 wgt oil - use straight 50, like motorcycle oil.

I tried heavy oil for neck turning with a power turner, and it didn't quite do it. It kept the cases from galling, but the spindle did show a worn spot under the cutter, after 1,100 cases).

Next time,and I pray there isn't...) I will use a graphite grease.

Yes that will work very well--know of one person who turned well over 200k of brass that way. I use it but it is rather difficult to remove but it can be done. There is a lube made by IOSSO that works great and has replaced the former method. The trick is that while turning on the mandrel you do not want to heat up the brass at all when you are removing metal because your results will be inconsistent.
