20VT Pistol, anyone have one?

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
Building a single shot pistol, in a 20cal, but can't figure out what I want. Mainly looking towards the 20VT, but really anything under the BR capacity would work. Just looking for anyone that has a pistol in a small caliber.

Adam

Built one (20 VT) on my rear grip Savage left hand repeater action with a single shot follower. 16" barrel. A little too much recoil (if you want to call it that) for what I was after. Final goal was to be able to see my hits thru the scope. Got close to my initial goal but not close enough for my liking.
Switched to the "short" version. (20 VT with the shoulder pushed back .200") Got even closer but still not what I was really after. 100 yards I could "almost" see the holes forming. Anything out to around 150 yards and you could see your hits. That was enough time for the rig to settle back down from the recoil jump. Straight pipe isn't enough weight to get the job done. Next step in a "20 TCM". That should get me what I want.:D

Even built one in the 17 VHA. Still havn't worked out all the kinks or got enough load data yet.;)

Did you have a brake on it?
Adam

No brake. My guess is it probably wouldn't make that much difference even with the straight pipe. It shoots fine. If I back the scope settings down, I get a better target picture. When I say "recoil". I'am not talking a BIG BUMP, just enough movement that it effects my sight picture. Anyone else shooting the rig probably wouldn't even notice it.
What I'am after is NO MOVEMENT when I squeeze the trigger. I want to see the bullet holes form.
Like shooting 22LR out of a 20 pound rig. But, with the ability to reload that round. The 20 TCM or even one in 17 caliber may be what it would take to get that job done.

Adam,
I have two XP-100 Remington's chambered for the 20 VT.
16" 1-11 twist barrels. They push the 32 gr v-maxes at 3500 fps, and shoot in the .1's & .2"s at a 100 yards. I don't have a brake on either gun. The center grip XP has a 1.200" straight tube, and you can watch hits through the scope. Todd Kindler has a little blurb about my XP's in his latest edition of "Terrific Twenties".
I saw that you had joined on SP!
Great place to hang out too,

-Mike

Built one years ago on a Sako L461 platform with a rear grip composite stock, fitted with a receiver floor plate plug. It was originally barreled with a no-name barrel in 222 Rem and it shot tiny groups at 100 yds. After many years of sleep time in the gun safe, four years ago I had PTG grind a 20 VT reamer and sent to Bob Green to fit a Lilja 15" barrel (no brake). Topped now with a Leupold 6.5x20, today it shoots tinier 100 yd. groups. Doing my part, I routinely get single hole three shot groups with 35 Bergers and VV N120.

I've built a few Xp's one of which was a 20vt center grip. The same guy i built that for had a McMillan rear grip BR stock, one of the older ones that takes an ADL guard. That's what got this whole shebang going, that plus I have one of the single shot 700s with small bolt face. I'm figuring a 15" barrel, Harrells brake, HV contour, and an 8.5-25x50LR leupold with a Degeorgio trigger. That seems like it would fit the bill.

As to the SP site, i joined hoping the subject would have been beaten to death and i could ABC my through the build, but i was shocked to see how little the 20VT was used on a pistol platform.

Not too many "small caliber" rigs on the SP site. More bigger bore for long range hunting. And like you mentioned, not much in the way of pistol builds in smaller calibers. The folks don't know what they're missing.;)
Even on Saubier as well as Small Caliber Club, pistol builds are lacking.:(

I've got a few small caliber xp's. 17AH, couple 17BR's, couple 20JI's, 20BR, 20TAC. The javelina imp's are awesome. 1 is a BR setup and the other is a centergrip. The centergrip moves just enough that I can't spot all my hits. The BR rig is easy to spot hits with. Saw a log of dogs fly this summer.

My barrel from X-caliber is ordered and the action is in transit, the stock will be here in a days, and to top it off the scope is paid for. So now I'll have to wait.....

I have shot Mike's 20VT and have watch Aaron shoot a couple of his small caliber pistols. They can make the rock chucks fly and it is totally visible in the scope. Recoil is nil, and accuracy is outstanding. When my winning lottery ticket comes in, I will get one......
