20vt / 221 fireball options

So I've read about every single thread on here pertaining to a 20 vartarg/221 fireball repeater and it seems the only viable options are a CZ527, an older rem, or bottom metal for a howa mini to accept CZ magazines.

I really don't want to spend $1,500 on a CZ527. Also the howa-CZ bottom metal from Jefferson outdoors are gone. Are there any other viable options I'm missing? Any other makers of bottom metals or any other options to feed this cartridge reliably? If not I might start looking at a 20-222rem.

What do you think you will have into a 20-222? Have you thought about setting back a CZ527 204 to 20VT.
I did and it worked out well.
I suppose I would probably have a little less into a 20-222 over a 20vt, but for $1500 I could get a new custom action and stock. I've looked everywhere for a CZ527. Cheapest I saw was $999 and the auction was still going.

Good Luck, please keep us posted

I have looked myself for last year with no good options. My gunsmith built one for a guy using a howa mini and modify the detachable mag. Said it fed perfict. I did not want to go that route. Tried to find any other information out there and could not. Even found a youtube channel where a guy from another country, cant remember where had a 221 fireball made by gunwerks. I emailed them and they do not offer anything for that cartridge at all. I ended up building a 20 practical.

That sucks. I'm sure the 20 practical is just as nice though! I saw these conversion bottom metals by Jefferson outdoors so the how mini can accept a CZ527 mag. I emailed him, and he said "I am making anther run hopefully to be finished soon." So who knows. I'm going to be sitting on this thinking for awhile, so maybe I'll get lucky somewhere.

If you do ever get it done id like to know. I would still like to build eather a 221 or 17 fireball. I do a lot of coyote hunting in my area and the 17 is fine for our small light fur coyotes around here. My gunsmith has since retired and used a 17hmr frequent for coyotes and was awsome on bobcats.

Will do! Hopefully I can or someone on here can help me figure something out. Also, looked at a 17 hornet for a smaller option, but appears only savage makes them. Had a 17hmr years ago, got rid of it, and regret it.

FWIW
I have 2 - Mini Howa's being rebarreled at Shaw Barrel currently , they should be back soon ,
1 in .17 Fireball and 1 in .221 Fireball , I should have done a .20 Vartarg right away also .

Brownells often has the Howa mini barreled actions on sale .

I plan on doing the Johnson Outdoor bottom metal , JO does regular runs on bottom metal , just hit the let me know button on the bottom metal you want .
Be forewarned a custom rifle does not have an easy button , figure at least a year , min , from start to finish .
I did a set of customized Rem 40X in left hand ( including a .17 Fb and a .221 FB , just ordered a .20VT barrel for another action I have ) , because of shipping damage it was close to 2 yrs before I had the .204 in my hands

Any .375” BF CZ 527 will feed the small 20VT from the mag ( 221,222,223,204) - I’ve tried them personally -

As to the Hiwa mini- I’ve yet to try, had couple say they feed-no personal -

I’d sell mine, you’re not gonna give what I’d ask, or have into it.. $1100 for the rifle, then everything else-…$2400…then you’d need to get dies made- which I have the reamer for that…

Sure I got plenty (3) single shots, 2 Bats & 1 Cooper …. Only 1 repeater !!!

Shame they quit making a great rifle!!!

The Sako would be a great one as well, with the blind mag, if you could find one..

All the clone Rem actions have to be a single conversion, done been/tried that too.. xcept the 17/221FB versions-

I’d be tempted to try a Howa mini next for a project..

Guess At’s why everyone who has a repeater is so proud of them, and not telling how much they have into it…

Your original thread on 20vt repeater is what really sparked my interest in wanting one. I agree, it's a shame. What an awesome little action it was! I may try the howa mini as is, and then try hunting down the Jefferson bottom metal. Read an article somewhere that the howa mini magazine is about 1/2 shorter than the 221 fireball, but feeds fine.

I’d like see one around local shops just to see if they would feed…I was assured they would- by word of mouth- no experience on my end-

Buddy got a 204,& 223 -527 & they feed my case flawless.. even if ya stagger the cases in the mag- one all way foward-backwards-

I have a Christensen Arms complete carbon fiber 223 scout- I “could” make single shot out of.. defeats purpose though..kinda

Another option for a mini repeater action , is Pristine @ www.shootpristine.com , while it is not listed currently , they are working on an action to fit the mini Howa stocks and mags , but , it is not available yet . This is one I'm keeping my eye . I like the mini Howa , but it is not available in left hand
I don’t see a 221FB action compatible for repeater-
Looks all to be 223 Rem clone-

The mini Howa clone is not listed currently , it is still in developement , they had it listed earlier as a prebuy ,

Here is the reply I recieved when I last checked on the progress in early June :

Yes the mini is moving along - It was just listed on the website as a pre - purchase option and I did not feel entirely comfortable with that considering we have not officially produced a product that is ready for customers.

I have built a rifle off of our mini clone for myself and have sent a few rounds away with it. So far so good.

MDT also has released another chassis in the mini inlet so that is also helpful!

I will let you know when we are ready to move forward on these!

I’m seeing all this interest. I have a Sako
A-1 that Greg Tannel through the kitchen sink to. It’s a 20VT 232 neck. I’ve shot it very little(less than 100 rounds). PM me if you have any interest. Will list it soon otherwise.
