20in barrel effects on velocity of a .243

I am thinking about putting a very short, "youth" size 20in barrel on my remington 700 pack rifle to lighten it as much as possible and I was wondering what kind of effects this would have on attainable velocity and accuracy or if it would even be worth putting it on. Any thoughts?

shorter bbl are stiffer and therefore more accurate. so you should see a small improvemment in accuracy. as for velocity, 308 with a 20" bbl don't seem to be affected much versus a 24" bbl. can't tell you about a 243, but they are the same case.

mightywhitehunter: Jason Baney did a test on this site about a year ago, the "general" results were 8 fps loss of velocity for each 1" of barrel length removed.

I cut and recrown Remington 700s all the time to make youth guns. 20" is about the minimum but works well on any of the 308 based cases. I can still get over 3000 fps with a 90 grain bullet in a .243.
