20cal bullet lengths

G'day all,

A mate has bought a CZ 527 Varmint in 204 Ruger. Im helping him with bullet choise and load development. Im chasing thr bullet length on the 40gr stuff from Hornady, Nosler and the heavys from Berger so I can run the stability calcs. Cant seem to find much for them is all. Also your experience with what bullets best for all round work and alike. Shots will be taken to 300 for now but option to 400m on rabbit and fox size ferals.

Cheers.

You can run the Berger ballistics here:

My CZ 204 seemed to like the 32 gr bullets much better. The CZ 204 rifles have a 1:12 twist which if you run the stability numbers on the 40 gr class bullets and they don't give favorable stability numbers which is what I found in the fields as well.

Unless your mate has re-barreled his C-Z to a faster 10-11 rifling twist rate, it's a waste of time to plan on shooting any 40 grain bullet. None of my (3) .204s - including a C-Z Varmint - stabilize them well. What do work very well in most 1:12 barrels are 39 gr. Sierra Blitzkings. Or, you can drop down to the 35 Berger hollow points and retain "kill-ability" on game/varmints (but lose some on trajectory, of course).
