.204 / Varget / 39SBK

Varget is a little slow for the .204. A 100% load density yields only ~47,000 pressure @ a bit over 3600 fps.

Most folks are having great luck using the 39's with either 10X or H4895.

Mike that is exactly what I am getting, 3645 FPS with 28.3 grains of Varget. Load density is 100%.

The load shoots great, also the fact that I have 24LBS. of Varget sitting around made me want to give it a try..

I think I have a little 4895 left...I will try that next...

Thanks very much for your help

Steve,

Short answer is yes to your question. It will vary ever so slightly depending on the actual case capacity and seating depth.

I just used the numbers from my .204 in the example, and have the data in Quickload.

Mike

A 40gr Vmax with 28gr Varget in Winchester brass and Remington BR primers showed 3857 on my chronograph from my LRPV, I didn't get to see what the 39BKs would do yet.

The Hogdon data says this should be about 55,100 PSI. They say it should be 3647 from a 24" barrel. I suppose my results are close since I have a 26" barrel.

This load shoots pretty good from my gun, everybodies experience will vary. I haven't settled on the ultimate load for this thing yet.

I would definately suggest that you try H4895!

In my Kimber Pro Varmint,22 inch barrel), the 39gr Sierra BK & 27.7grs H4895,Hodgon Maximum)gave me an average of 3873 fps for 5 shots. Actually, 2 of those rounds fired chronographed over 3900 fps, both were 3910 fps). This load generated no pressure signs at all.

It would be interesting to see how further I could go before I strike pressure signs, however I may just keep to this load from now on. Velocity and accuracy are impressive!

Hodgon say that this load generates around 55,000psi and according to their data 27.7grs H4895 behind a 40gr V-Max gives 3774fps in a 24inch barrel. I get an increase of 99fps in a 22 inch barrel.

I also found that H4895 was cleaner burning than BLC-2 I was developing loads with and produced less muzzle flash. 3673fps was the highest velocity I obtained with 29.8grs BLC-2, though the SD of 5 shots was very good and the accuracy about the same as my 27.7gr H4895 load.

Regards,

Michael.

My best load so far has been with 27gr of Varget with a 40 Nosler B tip, I only have 7 pounds of it. This load has produced more than 1 one hole group for me in my HS Varmint rifle. That said I can get a one hole group with factory 32gr Hornady cartridges. FS

Yes my Remington VSSF II likes Varget-27.6 grs with the Sierra 39 gr BK in WW brass and a CCI bench rest primer. This combo gets me 3680 fps Chronographed and shoots consistently 1/2 " to 3/4' groups at 200 yds.

I've tried 10x, RL-15, and BL-C,2) powders with luck. BL-C,2) seems to be the ticket for the 39 SBK. The 40 gr Berger shot best with a stout dose of RL-15.
