Does anyone know of a barrel maker that offers a 1.250 straight barrel for a 20 .cal I'm thinking of perhaps building a extremely heavy 204 for varmint hunting I want no recoil so I can see my hits. All input is appreciated.

Thank you for the reply I wonder if anyone has ever done a 1.25 straight or maybe I someone can suggest the next heaviest barrel they have tried.

Farmer, I had a couple of 1.250 blanks that I had turned down to savage large shank no taper. Makes a heavy rifle. Sits the bags very solidly and virtually no felt recoil.
One is a 204R 11 twist the other is 20-250 9 twist.

I have had several 1.25 straight and Max HV Harts on 20 calibers. In my opinion the Hart Max HV is the biggest barrel one needs on a 20 caliber! Makes for a shootin/spotting setup very heavy and no felt recoil

Not sure of why you think you need a 'truck-axle' barrel in 204 in order to see your hits with minimal recoil. One of my 204's is a M700 with a Pac-Nor barrel that I them contour to match the factory Remington barrel to give a simple drop-in installation.

The entire thing weighs right at 11.5 lbs scoped, and off the bench I can see virtually every hit/miss through the scope, and I don't need a hand-truck to lug it about.

To me, it sounds like you really want to build a "field rail gun". ;)

I've had and have a couple of those Max HV from Hart. They are VERY good and the folks at Hart are a pleasure to do business with. JME.WD

A heavy barrel might not be enough on closer shots with high scope magnification. Best bet for watching the shots in all situations is a heavy barrel AND and good muzzle brake.

Hart barrels are Wonderful and the folks at Hart are Great to do business with. I install more Hart barrels than any other if its my choice! Spot with 20 Vartarg it works. No recoil on a HV rig.

I have a Muller MTU, it’s a great barrel for my 20-221AI, & a Pacnor super match HV in 20BRAI. Not to impressed with the pacnor under the bore scope when it was new.. I have a Kreiger HV 29” now, can’t wait to get it chambered.!!
My next 20cal barrel will be a Benchmark.

Thanks to everyone and Rick in Oregon yes something similar to what you have posted. I would even to up to 17 or 18 lbs. perhaps fill the stock with lead.

If using a front rest, then a good benchrest style stock with 3"-4" wide flat forearm and flat rear butt helps tremendously so the rifle recoils straight rearward. A lot more stability over a stock with a rounded forearm and angled butt which can twist and recoils vertically.

My 20 Vartarg has a Hart HV finished at 26". Gun weighs 16.5lbs and is a BR style gun that tracks straight in the rest. I can maintain sight picture in my Vortex GE at 40x at 100 yards with it.

I was just sharing my experience, which is only punching paper. My 20 Vartarg can shoot 40gn vmax accurately at 3700fps, which I imagine would be a pretty satisfying splat out to 300 yards or perhaps a bit further. I'm not trying to convince you not to get the 204; I think it's a great choice if you want more oomph.
