The Original PA 1000 Yard Benchrest Club World Open is moving to a point scoring system in order to level the playing field and try to make relay assignments a non-issue.
That said, a win on relay 1 with a small group/high score is no better than a win on relay 12 with a larger group/lower score.
There’s always anxiety about relay assignments as everyone knows it’s better to luck into an early relay. With this scoring system in place the assignments are now going to become irrelevant.
Don’t get me wrong, small groups and high scores are to be rewarded and will be. However, a shooter who wins their relay with a target that’s not so great should, and will also be rewarded for the win. We are attempting to do our best to take Mother Nature and the 4 winds out of the equation. The new system is designed to let the shooters hard work and rifleman skills be evaluated by the condition that they shoot in, not the luck of getting to shoot in the finest of conditions.
This topic was poled at the 2018 WO and there was resounding support for this change.
I’m not going to get into the weeds of the formulas, equations, mathematics, statistics, etc. on this forum. The scoring system has taken 6 months to develop and I cannot speak intelligently to the manner in which it works.
This is simply a notice of the change and being 100% transparent about it.
See you next month at the 2019 World Open. It’s going to be a great time.
